US Skips UN’s 2-State Conference, Warns India of “Ill-Timed” Move Amid Gaza Crisis

New York, July 29, 2025 — The United States has officially boycotted a United Nations conference on the Israel-Palestine two-state solution, branding it as “ill-timed, unproductive, and a publicity stunt”. Washington also conveyed its concerns directly to India, which is among 120 countries and agencies participating.

US Stands Firm: ‘No Time for Symbolism’

The US State Department, in a sharply worded statement, said the conference co-chaired by France and Saudi Arabia risks derailing ongoing diplomatic efforts to end the Gaza war and free hostages. “Far from promoting peace, the conference will prolong the war, embolden Hamas, and reward its obstruction,” said spokesperson Tammy Bruce.

India’s Balanced Diplomacy

Despite US objections, India has opted to participate, aligning with its long-standing support for a two-state solution. Indian Ambassador P. Harish reiterated India’s call for a ceasefire, release of hostages, and a peaceful resolution that ensures “a sovereign, viable Palestinian state living side by side with Israel.”

India had earlier supported a UNGA resolution calling for this very summit, although it was delayed due to the Iran-Iraq conflict.

France Recognizes Palestine, Fuels Debate

The conference gained further attention after French President Emmanuel Macron announced that France would recognize the Palestinian state the first G7 nation to do so. The US, however, criticized the move, saying it “only emboldens Hamas and undercuts ceasefire efforts.”

India’s Strategic Tightrope

India continues its diplomatic balancing act maintaining close ties with Israel while also supporting the Palestinian cause. The Ministry of External Affairs told Parliament last week that India’s stance remains unchanged: “a negotiated 2-state solution within recognized borders.”
