System On Trial After Custodial Death In Jharkhand

In July 2025, police accused Aftab Ansari of raping a tribal woman in Ramgarh district, Jharkhand. Security forces detained him late at night, but Ansari escaped custody while being handcuffed. Two days later, officials discovered his body near the Damodar River. Authorities suspect he jumped to avoid re-arrest.

Suspensions Signal Administrative Lapse

Police suspended the officer‑in‑charge and three constables after the incident. The administration cited negligence in managing custody and preventing escape. Local activists raised alarms over how an accused in a violent crime could slip away so easily and die before the trial process concluded.

The tribal community, already distrusting official systems, reacted strongly to the accused’s death. Protests flared after local activists alleged that law enforcement treated the accused harsher than victims. The family of Ansari received no information about his death before activists discovered his body. That silence deepened suspicion.

This tragedy reveals deeper flaws in custodial protocols and police accountability. Law enforcement must prevent escapes and safeguard lives in care. Officers must apply vigilance not only after arrests but throughout detention. The absence of clear documentation and witness support highlights systemic fragility. When custody rests on assumptions of fairness, it can collapse.

Justice cannot begin with Evaders Dead

Ansari had legal rights, accused or not. He deserved legal process, not death outside courtroom scrutiny. Now the system owes transparency. It must conduct impartial inquests into the conditions and decisions that led to his escape and death.

Authorities must act swiftly. Officials need to explain how a detainee managed to flee, why safeguards failed, and whether the death was preventable. Full departmental investigations should finish with disciplinary action or reforms. Custodial justice demands procedural integrity, not mere containment.
