On July 13 evening, Delhi Police recovered the body of Sneha Debnath, a 19-year-old Delhi University student from Tripura. Search teams found her under the Geeta Colony flyover in the Yamuna River after six days of intense searching.
Sneha was last seen near Signature Bridge on July 7. CCTV footage and mobile location tracking helped police narrow down the area. Her parents confirmed her identity after reaching the mortuary.
Officials sent the body for post-mortem to determine the exact cause of death. Police said they were treating the case as a possible suicide, but investigations were still underway.

Sneha studied mathematics at Atma Ram Sanatan Dharma College under Delhi University. Originally from Sabroom in South Tripura, she had been living in Delhi with her family.
On the morning of July 7, Sneha left home saying she was dropping a friend to a bus stop. She never returned. Hours later, her phone went unreachable, sparking panic in her family.
Two days later, police filed a missing persons report. They began tracking her movements using technical surveillance. Eventually, all signals pointed to the Signature Bridge stretch of the Yamuna.
Friends revealed she had sent messages and emails expressing feelings of emotional distress. Her mother discovered a note in her room, where Sneha apologized and expressed feeling like a burden.
Emotional Toll and Questions Over Mental Health Support
This tragic incident has reignited concerns about student mental health, especially among outstation students in Delhi. Sneha reportedly struggled with anxiety for months, but no formal psychological support had been arranged.
Her friends mentioned that she often felt lonely, despite being academically bright. She had also spoken about the pressure of performing well in a competitive environment like Delhi University.
Social media has seen an outpouring of grief. Hashtags like #JusticeForSneha and #StudentMentalHealth trended briefly on X (formerly Twitter).
Tripura DU Student Case Draws Political Attention
Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha acknowledged the tragedy on social media. He said the state government remained in touch with Delhi authorities and would support the bereaved family.
“The loss of such a young life is heartbreaking. We need to ensure this never happens again,” he stated.
The Delhi Police confirmed that a forensic team had reviewed the scene and collected all relevant evidence. They also stated that no foul play had been established yet.
Locals, however, expressed concern about the non-functioning CCTV cameras near the Signature Bridge. This stretch has been notorious for suicides, yet surveillance remains weak.
Tripura DU Student Tragedy Underlines Need for Action
This case should serve as a wake-up call for universities and law enforcement. Student support systems require urgent upgrades, especially for those from distant states.
Experts say Delhi University should introduce mandatory mental wellness programs, crisis hotlines, and stronger hostel support. Parents and faculty both play crucial roles in identifying warning signs early.
While the final autopsy report is awaited, Sneha’s family has returned to Tripura with her body for the last rites. Their pain now becomes a symbol of a larger systemic failure.
