TMC Leader Murder Sparks Widespread Outrage Across Birbhum
In a chilling act of political violence, Piyush Ghosh, a Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader, was fatally shot late Saturday night in Komarpur village, Birbhum. Ghosh, aged 42, held the post of Srinidhipur panchayat president and also served as agriculture treasurer for the TMCโs Sainthia block.

Around 11 PM, he received a phone call and immediately left his residence. Moments later, villagers discovered his lifeless body nearly 500 meters away. A bullet had pierced through the back of his head, indicating a close-range execution.
TMC Leader Murder Follows a Disturbing Trend in State Politics
Ghoshโs murder marks the third TMC-linked killing in West Bengal in just three days. On Thursday, Abul Kalam Azad was found murdered in Malda. On Friday, Razzak Khan, a TMC-backed candidate in Bhangar, was also gunned down.
The alarming frequency of these killings has ignited concern among political leaders and citizens alike. Ghoshโs family, deeply shaken, claimed that internal party rivalry had grown hostile in recent weeks. They alleged that certain individuals within the party had actively conspired against him.
Despite the emotional weight of these claims, the police have expanded the investigation. They are now exploring possible business disputes, personal vendettas, and internal political tensions. Police detained three individuals, including Moushumi Mal, a known TMC worker, for questioning.
Political Leaders React Swiftly, Calling for Urgent Action
TMC MLA Abhijit Sinha visited the murder site early Sunday. He assured locals that law enforcement would act swiftly and leave no angle unexplored. โWe cannot tolerate political violence. Our party will stand behind Ghoshโs family,โ Sinha stated.
Birbhum SP Amandeep confirmed the launch of a high-priority investigation. The forensic team collected ballistic evidence and call logs from Ghoshโs phone. Local police stations have been put on alert to prevent further unrest.
BJP leader Shyamapada Mondal also visited the village and demanded a CBI inquiry. โThis is no longer just about one murder. The state must address the failing law and order situation,โ he said.
TMC Leader Murder Triggers Protests in Komarpur Village
Local residents gathered at dawn, forming human chains and blocking roads to protest the killing. Many carried placards demanding safety and justice. While they acknowledged political divisions, most expressed frustration with the rising culture of impunity.
Women in the village organized a candlelight vigil at Ghoshโs home. Several recalled his contributions to agriculture projects and village education schemes. โHe helped install water pumps, supported widow pensions, and even donated land for a school,โ said a local teacher.
Rising Tensions Within the Party May Have Fueled the Murder
Insiders claim Ghosh had grown increasingly critical of certain party decisions. He objected to misappropriation of panchayat funds and clashed with powerful local contractors.
Two weeks ago, he publicly criticized delayed MNREGA payments. He also opposed a proposed construction tender, citing procedural violations. That decision reportedly upset several TMC allies in the area.
His family stated that anonymous threats had surfaced in the past month. Though Ghosh ignored them, fearing political retaliation, his family now believes those warnings should have been reported.
TMC Leader Murder Raises Serious Questions on Governance and Security
Piyush Ghoshโs murder has exposed deeper fissures in Bengalโs local governance and party dynamics. The state faces a growing challenge in containing factionalism and preventing politically driven violence.
If left unaddressed, these killings may erode public trust and weaken democratic structures in rural areas. As calls for justice grow louder, the state government must act decisively.
Political observers believe the upcoming panchayat review meetings will now take place under heightened security. For Ghoshโs family and village, however, healing may take far longer.
