Iran Set to Reject U.S. Nuclear Proposal Over Core Disagreements
Iran is preparing to reject a new nuclear proposal from the United States, calling it a โnon-starter.โ A senior Iranian diplomat told Reuters that the offer fails to meet Tehranโs key demands and does not serve the countryโs national interests.
The proposal was delivered through Omanโs Foreign Minister, Sayyid Badr Albusaidi. It aims to revive talks after the U.S. withdrew from the 2015 nuclear deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), in 2018.
Iran objects to the proposalโs demand for limiting uranium enrichment. Tehran insists on its right to enrich uranium for peaceful purposes and refuses to give up its current stockpile.
Another major issue is the lack of clear sanctions relief. Iran wants immediate lifting of sanctions that affect its economy, especially those on oil and banking. The U.S., however, prefers a gradual approach.
Tehran also seeks guarantees that the U.S. wonโt withdraw from any future deal, like it did in 2018. The current proposal does not offer such assurances.
Despite rejecting the offer, Iranian officials say they are open to a political agreement. Iran is especially interested in releasing frozen funds abroad and gaining recognition of its peaceful nuclear rights.
The news has already affected global oil prices. Brent crude rose slightly to $64.84 per barrel, and U.S. West Texas Intermediate reached $62.79, reflecting concerns over continued sanctions.
Talks are ongoing, but with both sides unwilling to shift their positions, a diplomatic breakthrough seems unlikely in the near term.
