Ankita Bhandari Murder Case: Refusal to ‘Serve’ VIP Guests Led to Her Death, Chargesheet Reveals

On September 24, six days after she was last seen, Ankita’s body was retrieved from a canal.

The Crime That Shocked the Nation

Ankita Bhandari, a young receptionist at Vanantara Resort in Uttarakhand’s Pauri district, was reported missing in September 2022. Days later, her body was found in a canal near the property. The recent 500-page chargesheet filed by the police offers a chilling account of the events that led to her murder.

According to investigators, Ankita had repeatedly objected to being forced into offering “personal services” to VIP guests—allegedly a code for sexual favours. Her refusal reportedly angered the resort’s owner and his associates, leading to a confrontation that turned fatal.

Pre-Planned Murder, Say Investigators

The chargesheet suggests that the murder was not impulsive, but premeditated. On the night of the incident, Ankita was allegedly lured under the pretext of a discussion and later pushed into the canal by the resort owner Pulkit Arya and his accomplices, Ankit Gupta and Saurabh Bhaskar.

Call records and witness statements included in the chargesheet indicate prior planning and coordination among the accused. The document states that Ankita’s last WhatsApp messages and voice notes reflect her fear and resistance toward what she was being asked to do.

VIP Pressure and Political Connections

Pulkit Arya, the prime accused, is the son of a former BJP leader. The political connection has amplified public outrage, with many alleging that the accused initially received undue protection and leniency. Public protests and social media campaigns played a critical role in pushing authorities to act.

Uttarakhand Police have confirmed that the resort staff, including the accused, had a history of facilitating high-end services for select guests, adding credibility to Ankita’s claims.

Demands for Justice and Systemic Reform

The case has sparked nationwide outrage, with women’s rights groups, civil society organizations, and political leaders demanding fast-track justice. There are also renewed calls for stronger protections for women in the hospitality and service sectors.

Ankita’s family continues to seek justice, insisting on life imprisonment for all three accused. They have also called for systemic changes to prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future.

A Reminder of Power and Vulnerability

Ankita Bhandari’s murder is not just a singular crime—it represents a deeper issue of exploitation, impunity, and gendered violence in environments where power dynamics are deeply skewed. The case remains under judicial scrutiny, with the next hearing scheduled in the coming weeks.
