From India to the World: Homebound Makes Waves at Cannes

With a 9-minute standing ovation, Homebound marks a cultural breakthrough for India on the international stage.

The 2025 Cannes Film Festival marked a major occasion for Indian cinema. Director Neeraj Ghaywan’s awaited feature Homebound could officially screen and receive rave reviews in the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes. The film screened to a 9-minute standing ovation. Thus speaking volumes of the emotional power of the film and its cinematic quality.

About the Film

Homebound, featuring actors Janhvi Kapoor, Ishaan Khatter, and Vishal Jethwa, has powerful performances by each of them. In the narrative of Homebound, very particular threads of anguish, healing, and trauma are explored through a family working toward healing. Their history and deep-rooted trauma in an emotionally dense framework.

Ghaywan first gained international prominence through his debut film, Masaan, in 2015. Ten years later, Ghaywan returned to Cannes, with Homebound. A film that solidifies Ghaywan’s position as one of India’s finest, impactful, and socially significant voices.

The Cast: Emotion On-Screen and Off-Screen

Not only was the film critically acclaimed at its Cannes premiere, but it was also emotionally charged for the cast and crew. We saw actors Janhvi Kapoor and Ishaan Khatter hug each other and shed tears after the screening as they absorbed the near-extinct audience’s rapturous response. Vishal Jethwa, granted, has been receiving praise lately for his steadily constructed reputation for taking on layered characters, was also recognized for his gripping performance.

For Janhvi Kapoor, this is a massive step in her journey. From typical mainstream Bollywood films to more internationally and character rich films.

Red Carpet Debut: Janhvi Kapoor’s Tribute to Sridevi

Janhvi Kapoor made her Cannes red carpet debut in a stunning ivory gown by designer Tarun Tahiliani. The dress was intended to be a tribute to her late mother, actress Sridevi. While netizens have split opinions on the look (some even calling it bridal attire) it undeniably adds a personal sentiment to Kapoor’s Cannes appearance.

Production and Global Collaboration

Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions produced Homebound, along with Melita Toscan du Plantier and Marijke de Souza. This international co-production showcases the increasing trend of international collaborations in Indian cinema which provides more opportunity to tell ambitious stories and reach bigger audiences.

The combination of Ghaywan’s careful direction, Scorsese’s international profile and Dharma’s production resources create a truly unique blend of art. House authenticity with commercial ambition.

A Historic Moment for Indian Cinema

The remarkable success of Homebound at Cannes in 2025 is more than a personal triumph for the cast and crew. It represents a momentous occasion for Indian cinema internationally. Homebound should perform well in other global festivals. There’s a possibility to see Oscar buzz, depending on what time it will be released.

Homebound is also a timely reminder in an age that Indian stories are finding a home in the global conversation. Of the power of cinema to cross borders, languages, and cultures.
