The Ashoka professor controversy continues to stir public debate across Indiaโ€™s academic landscape. Ashoka Professor Controversy Draws Widespread Condemnation

More than 200 scholars, including 20 Vice-Chancellors, signed a statement condemning Mahmudabadโ€™s remarks. They accused him of destabilizing communal harmony and undermining gender equity. According to them, his comments following Operation Sindoor deserve serious scrutiny by the Supreme Court.

Signatories include respected figures from JNU, Gujarat University, Central University of Rajasthan, and the University of Ladakh. Their statement called the professorโ€™s words โ€œveiled misogyny disguised as academic inquiry.โ€ They particularly objected to his comments on Colonel Sofiya Qureshiโ€™s post-operation media appearance.

By calling her inclusion performative, the signatories argue, he dismissed her credibility. They warned this perspective weakens institutional trust and social progress.

Students, Teachers Support Mahmudabad Amid Crackdown

Despite the criticism, many teachers and students defended the professor. At a Press Club of India conference, several organizations condemned what they called a โ€œstate-led assault on academic freedom.โ€ They claimed his arrest by Haryana Police violated both constitutional rights and university autonomy.

Surajit Mazumdar of JNUโ€™s Teachersโ€™ Association stressed that silencing scholars harms public debate. Anita Rampal, former Delhi University Dean, praised Mahmudabadโ€™s inclusive teaching style. She described his classes as fostering critical thought, empathy, and respect.

Student leaders like Insha from Ashoka University and Nitish Kumar from JNU joined the support. They warned against shrinking space for academic inquiry and civil disagreement. They urged the government to protect institutions from political influence.

Mahmudabad did not appear before the Womenโ€™s Commission but shared a public statement. He clarified that his remarks targeted political narratives, not military personnel. He reaffirmed support for Indiaโ€™s armed forces and called for balance between security and human rights.

Debating Academiaโ€™s Limits

The Ashoka professor controversy reflects deeper tensions between academia, nationalism, and democratic discourse. As debate grows, Indiaโ€™s intellectual community faces a critical question: can scholars freely challenge dominant narratives without state retaliation?

The outcome of this debate will define how universities balance individual freedom and collective responsibility in Indiaโ€™s evolving democracy.
