Sudanese Student Killed, Another Injured in Brutal Pre-Dawn Attack Near Phagwara University; Police Swiftly Arrest All Six Accused

Phagwara, Punjab โ€”A 25-year-old Sudanese student was fatally stabbed while another sustained critical wounds in a stunning and terrible event early Thursday morning in a fight near a private institution in Phagwara. Particularly among African residents in the area, the crime has sent waves of rage and anxiety among the international student community. Both Sudanese citizens studying further education in India, Mohammad Wada Bala Yousuf Ahmed and Ahmed Mohammad Nour Ahmed Hussen, have been recognised as the dead student and the wounded, respectively. Police sources claim the attackers were six Indian men, Kuwar Amar Partap Singh, Aditya Garg, Mohammed Shoib, Sushank, also known as “Shaggy,” and Yash Vardhan Rajput, all from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar and living in local paying guest quarters in Phagwara. Abdul Ahadh from Karnataka. Returning from pre-dawn Nawaz (morning prayers), the two Sudanese students along with two female classmates from Sudan were stopped and bullied by the group of Indian guys. Reportedly alcohol-affected, the men started harassing the women and asking for their cell phone numbers. The fight grew worse when Mohammad Wada and Ahmed got involved. Before running from the scene, two of the attackers allegedly stabbed both students in the chest with knives. The incident happened just before 4:00 AM on Thursday, under the cover of darkness, a time most of the neighbourhood was still asleep. The emotional and cultural weight of the event has been increased by the attack’s timing during calm morning religious practice. Near the Law Gate district in Phagwara, Maheru hamletย a well-known destination for foreign students especially from African countries the stabbing happened in Green Valley because of its closeness to local private institutions. Preliminary inquiries and a declaration submitted by the harmed student show that the event grew out of harassment aimed at the two accompanying female pupils. The circumstances turned violent when the victims rose to defend their friends and preserve their dignity. The reason seems grounded in a blend of misogyny, racial profiling, and alcohol-induced hostility. Under Senior Superintendent of Police Gaurav Toora, Phagwara police moved quickly and displayed great coordination and efficiency. All six suspects were located inside of five hours using CCTV footage, technical surveillance, and local intelligence. They were caught without delay in Mandi, Himachal Pradesh. SSP Gaurav Toora commended his team for their fast response, noting: “This was a horrific crime. We dispatched several crews and utilised every investigative resource accessible as soon as we got data. The operation was carried out with extreme precision. Among the Phagwara African student population, who have often voiced worries about racial harassment and safety in the areas around the college, the assault has caused much anxiety and fury. Students are therefore pushing authorities to:

  • Increase patrols in student-dense areas.
  • Increase CCTV coverage.
  • On college, put in more robust anti-racism consciousness campaigns.

Many have shown support for the victims and called for justice by holding vigils and spreading online messages to highlight the difficulties faced by foreign students in India. This terrible event underscores the critical need for more secure surroundings for international students, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds. Although the fast arrest of the offenders is admirable, to avoid future tragedies one should put into place long-term measures like awareness, community involvement, and institutional safeguards.
