Southwest Monsoon Advances Early; Cyclone ‘Shakti’ Under Watch in Bay of Bengal

Monsoon Arrives Over Andaman Sea and Bay of Bengal

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) announced that the southwest monsoon has advanced into parts of the south Bay of Bengal, the south Andaman Sea, and the Nicobar Islands. This early movement is expected to bring light to moderate rainfall in several areas, with weather patterns indicating a quicker progression compared to previous years.

Meteorologists Monitor Signs of Cyclone Formation

A cyclonic circulation has formed over the Andaman Sea at an altitude ranging from 1.5 km to 7.6 km above sea level. While the IMD has not officially confirmed cyclone formation, meteorologists are observing the system closely. According to Bangladeshi weather expert Mostafa Kamal Palash, a low-pressure system could emerge between May 16 and 18. If it strengthens further, the system could develop into a cyclone named ‘Shakti’ sometime between May 23 and 28.

Thunderstorm Alerts Issued in Kerala

The IMD has issued yellow alerts across several districts in Kerala, forecasting thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds that could reach speeds of 40 to 50 km/h. Alerts were issued for Pathanamthitta, Idukki, and Malappuram on Tuesday and for Ernakulam, Wayanad, and Kannur on Wednesday. Residents in these regions have been advised to take necessary precautions.

Coastal Warning for Fishermen

The Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) issued a swell surge alert for Kerala’s coastline, cautioning about swell waves between 0.4 to 0.5 meters. The alert urges fishermen and coastal communities to avoid venturing into the sea until conditions stabilize.

Broader Weather Outlook

From May 12 to 14, parts of Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Gujarat, Chhattisgarh, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka are likely to experience rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds. This widespread activity aligns with the early onset of the monsoon and the unstable conditions currently developing in the Bay of Bengal.
