25 Airports Temporarily Closed Amid India-Pakistan Tensions

New Delhi, May 8, 2025 โ€” In response to heightened tensions following India’s Operation Sindoor, the Indian government has temporarily closed 27 airports across northern, western, and central regions until May 10. This precautionary measure aims to ensure civilian safety amid escalating military activities along the India-Pakistan border.

IndiGo said it has cancelled more than 165 flights from various domestic airports, including Amritsar and Srinagar, till early morning of May 10 due to airspace restrictions. (File IMAGE: REUTERS)

Airports Affected and Flight Disruptions

The Airports Authority of India (AAI) issued Notices to Airmen (NOTAMs). These notices led to the suspension of operations at major airports like Leh, Chandigarh, Amritsar, Jodhpur, Jammu, Srinagar, and Bhuj. Over 430 flights were canceled. Both domestic and international travel were affected. Airlines such as IndiGo, Air India, SpiceJet, and Akasa Air offered waivers on rescheduling fees. They also provided full refunds to affected passengers.

Operation Sindoor and Its Aftermath

On May 6, India launched Operation Sindoor, targeting nine sites within Pakistan identified as terrorist infrastructure linked to groups like Jaish-e-Mohammed and Lashkar-e-Taiba. The operation was in retaliation for the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22, which claimed 26 Indian lives.

Pakistan condemned the strikes, labeling them an “act of war,” and claimed civilian casualties. In response, Pakistan reported shooting down several Indian aircraft and vowed a strong military response.

International Airlines Reroute Flights

The escalating conflict has disrupted international air travel, with airlines like United Airlines, Korean Air, and Malaysia Airlines rerouting or canceling flights to avoid the conflict zone. Flight tracking data indicates a near-complete shutdown of flights over Pakistan, with only a few aircraft visible.

Government Statements and Public Advisory

The Ministry of Civil Aviation stated, “The temporary closure of select airports is a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of passengers and crew amid the current security situation.” Passengers are advised to check with their respective airlines for the latest updates on flight schedules and airport operations.

Conclusion

The temporary closure of 27 airports underscores the severity of the current India-Pakistan tensions. As both nations navigate this volatile situation, the international community watches closely, urging restraint and a return to diplomatic dialogue to prevent further escalation.
