India is entering May with rising concerns over an intensifying heatwave sweeping across large parts of the country. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of significantly above-normal temperatures in the coming weeks. These conditions are expected particularly in northwestern, central, and eastern states.

April has already shown alarming signs. Rajasthan experienced up to 11 days of extreme heat, far exceeding the typical 2โ€“3 days for this time of year. Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, and Vidarbha reported an unusual number of heatwave days. These range from 4 to 6 days. This suggests that India is facing a prolonged and more intense summer.

May will likely bring not only hotter days, but warmer nights as well, according to the IMD. This offers little respite, even after sunset. High day and night temperatures both pose serious risks to public health. Vulnerable populations without access to reliable cooling or hydration resources are particularly at risk.

Cities are beginning to respond with innovative solutions. Ahmedabad is rolling out a pilot project. It equips residents of low-income communities with smartwatches. These smartwatches monitor their vital signs and sleep quality. In an effort to reduce indoor heat, homes are also being painted with reflective materials.

Hospitals, meanwhile, are witnessing a sharp rise in patient numbers. Health officials report a 30% to 40% increase in outpatient visits. This increase is largely due to heat-related issues like dehydration, fatigue, and heatstroke.

Climate change is making extreme weather events more severe and frequent. Experts urge people to take precautions. Stay indoors during peak heat hours. Drink plenty of fluids. Follow government health advisories closely.

This yearโ€™s heatwave is not just a seasonal eventโ€”it is a warning. India must prepare now, not only for this summer but for many hotter summers to come.
