Evacuations in Jerusalem Due to Devastating Wildfire

Over 5,000 acres burned as Israel grapples with the worst wildfire in recent history, forcing evacuations and triggering a nationwide response.

Jerusalem – A devastating wildfire has swept through the hills surrounding Jerusalem. It has triggered a national emergency. Thousands of residents have been forced to evacuate. The blaze began on April 30 near the areas of Eshtaol and Latrun. It has already scorched more than 5,000 acres. High winds and dry conditions are fueling its rapid spread.

Communities including Neve Shalom, Mesilat Zion, and Mishmar Ayalon have been evacuated as the fire advanced uncontrollably. Major highways were closed. This includes Route 1 and Route 3, key connections between Jerusalem and Tel Aviv. Flames and thick smoke made travel impossible. In some areas, drivers were seen abandoning their vehicles and fleeing on foot.

Emergency services reported at least 45 injuries so far, with dozens suffering from smoke inhalation. Among them are 20 firefighters who have been working around the clock to contain the inferno. In response to the growing crisis, the Israel Defense Forces have deployed troops and equipment. Firefighting aircraft from countries including Italy, France, Croatia, and Romania have been sent to assist.

Authorities are investigating the cause of the fire, and early reports suggest that arson may be involved. At least 18 individuals have been arrested under suspicion of deliberately igniting the flames.

In light of the disaster, Israel has canceled its upcoming Memorial Day and Independence Day ceremonies. President Isaac Herzog addressed the nation. He called the wildfires a stark warning of the worsening effects of climate change on the region.
