Yashasvi Jaiswal makes surprise switch from Mumbai to Goa

Yashasvi Jaiswal after scoring a century for Mumbai
India’s young opener, Yashasvi Jaiswal, has decided to part ways with Mumbai, the domestic team that played a pivotal role in shaping his career, citing personal reasons.
In a letter to the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) on Tuesday, Jaiswal expressed his desire to shift to Goa, a request that the MCA has approved. This unexpected move means that the 23-year-old left-hander will now represent Goa in domestic cricket starting from the 2025-26 season.
A Surprise Decision
Jaiswalโs decision has come as a shock to many, given his deep-rooted association with Mumbai cricket. A product of Mumbaiโs renowned cricketing structure, he rose through the ranks with consistent performances, earning an India call-up. His decision to move to Goa is seen as a significant shift in his domestic career, although the exact reasons remain undisclosed.
Last Appearance for Mumbai
Jaiswal last played for Mumbai in a Ranji Trophy Group A league match against Jammu and Kashmir from January 23-25. Due to the BCCIโs strict directive, mandating India players to participate in domestic cricket when not on national duty, he featured in only one game of the Ranji Trophy 2024-25 season, where he scored 4 and 26. Mumbai went on to lose that match by five wickets, marking only the second time in tournament history that they had suffered defeat to Jammu and Kashmir.
Trend of Mumbai Players Moving to Goa
Jaiswal is not the first Mumbai cricketer to switch to Goa. In recent years, Arjun Tendulkar and Siddhesh Lad have also made similar moves, shifting to Goa ahead of the 2022-23 season. Lad, a seasoned right-handed batter, completed his cooling-off period before making a successful return to Mumbai in last seasonโs Ranji Trophy.
Establishing Himself at the International Level
Since making his Test debut against the West Indies in July 2023, Jaiswal has cemented his place as Indiaโs first-choice opener. He has played 19 Tests, delivering stellar performances on the biggest stage. With an impressive average of over 52, he has already recorded four centuries and 10 half-centuries, making him one of India’s most promising young batters.
