Kolkata Weather Today: Cloudy Skies, Intermittent Rain Likely as Fresh Low-Pressure System Influences South Bengal

Kolkata: September 11, 2026: Kolkata is likely to remain under a predominantly cloudy sky on Friday, with intermittent spells of rain or thundershowers keeping the monsoon firmly in control of the city’s weather pattern. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast a minimum temperature of around 24°C and a maximum of about 32°C for Kolkata, with one or two spells of rain or thundershowers possible during the day.
The latest weather developments suggest that the city may escape the more intense spell of rainfall expected over several districts of southern West Bengal. A fresh low-pressure area has formed over the Bay of Bengal, while the broader monsoon circulation continues to influence the state. The system is expected to trigger more substantial rainfall over parts of South Bengal, although the impact over Kolkata is projected to remain comparatively subdued.
For Kolkata, the immediate picture is therefore one of cloud cover, humidity and scattered showers rather than prolonged torrential rain. The weather could remain changeable, with dry intervals giving way to sudden showers, particularly as moisture-laden winds feed into the lower atmosphere. Such conditions could also produce brief thunderstorms in and around the metropolitan region.
The city had already recorded notable rainfall in the preceding 24-hour period. According to the IMD’s Kolkata-Howrah weather report, 20.8 mm of rain was recorded between 8.30am on September 9 and 8.30am on September 10, while the minimum temperature on September 10 was 25.8°C. Relative humidity at 8.30am stood at 78%, reflecting the persistently moisture-rich conditions associated with the ongoing monsoon.
The Salt Lake observation showed a somewhat different picture, with no rainfall recorded during the corresponding 24-hour period and a minimum temperature of 26.7°C. The contrast highlights the highly localised nature of monsoon showers across Kolkata and its adjoining urban areas.
Across South Bengal, meanwhile, the weather system is expected to be more consequential. The latest forecast indicates the possibility of heavy rain in East Midnapore, West Midnapore, Jhargram, Bankura and Birbhum, accompanied by gusty winds in some areas. Other parts of southern Bengal may receive light to moderate rainfall.
For Kolkata residents, the principal concern is likely to be sudden rain during commuting hours rather than a city-wide deluge. Waterlogging could nevertheless emerge in vulnerable low-lying pockets if showers become intense over a short period. Traffic movement may also slow temporarily where rain coincides with peak-hour congestion.
The weather outlook suggests that the unsettled conditions will not disappear immediately. IMD’s city forecast indicates rain or thunderstorms on September 12, followed by further chances of rain and thunderstorms over the next several days. Temperatures could gradually climb again after the weekend, with the mercury potentially reaching the mid-30s in the following week.
The latest forecast therefore points to a familiar September pattern for Kolkata: a humid monsoon atmosphere, thick cloud cover, intermittent showers and brief breaks in rainfall rather than continuous downpour. Residents heading out should keep rain protection handy, while motorists should exercise caution during sudden showers and thunderstorms.
With another low-pressure system developing over the Bay, the city’s weather remains firmly tied to the evolving monsoon circulation. For now, Kolkata appears to be on the lighter side of the rainfall zone, but the possibility of sudden showers means the day could change quickly from cloudy and humid to wet and gusty.
