Kolkata Weather Today: Cloudy Skies, Thundershowers Likely; City to Remain Warm and Humid

KOLKATA: Kolkata is likely to remain under a predominantly cloudy and unsettled weather regime on Thursday, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting one or two spells of rain or thundershowers during the day. The city is expected to see a maximum temperature of around 31°C, while the minimum may remain close to 26°C, keeping conditions warm and humid despite the possibility of intermittent showers.
The latest IMD forecast indicates that the weather over Kolkata will be characterised more by intermittent spells than by continuous rainfall. The Alipore observatory has forecast a generally cloudy sky with one or two spells of rain or thundershowers on September 10. Thunderstorms could also be accompanied by gusty winds of around 30-40 kmph, making sudden changes in weather possible, particularly during active convective spells.
The weather pattern comes after another wet spell across parts of the city and adjoining areas. The IMD’s recent observations show that Kolkata-Alipore recorded a maximum temperature of 32.4°C and a minimum of 25.9°C on September 9, while the station recorded 0.9 mm of rainfall. Conditions were more pronounced around the Dum Dum area, where the observatory recorded 17.9 mm of rainfall over the preceding 24-hour observation period.
The broader Kolkata-Howrah region also experienced substantial rainfall. According to the IMD, Howrah recorded 60 mm of rainfall in the 24 hours ending at 8.30am on September 9. The data underlines the uneven nature of the current monsoon activity, with rainfall intensity varying considerably across relatively short distances.
The unsettled conditions are linked to the continuing influence of monsoon systems over eastern India. Weather authorities have indicated the possibility of a low-pressure area developing over the west-central and northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining coastal areas, while a broader monsoon circulation remains conducive to rainfall over parts of West Bengal and neighbouring regions.
For Kolkata, however, the immediate outlook is not necessarily one of prolonged heavy rain. Instead, residents can expect periods of overcast skies punctuated by showers or thunderstorms. Such weather can create a familiar September pattern in the city—brief but intense downpours, followed by humid intervals when the rain moves away.
The temperature is also unlikely to fall dramatically despite the rain. With the daytime mercury hovering around the low 30s and the minimum remaining in the mid-20s, humidity is expected to continue playing a major role in how the weather feels. The combination of moisture-laden air, cloud cover and intermittent sunshine could leave the city feeling muggy between showers.
The weather office has also forecast similar conditions for Friday, with Kolkata likely to see another generally cloudy day and one or two spells of rain or thundershowers. The possibility of thunderstorms and gusty winds is expected to continue, suggesting that the unsettled spell is unlikely to disappear immediately.
For commuters, the biggest concern could be sudden showers rather than an all-day downpour. Water accumulation may occur temporarily in low-lying stretches and on roads where drainage is slower, particularly if a strong shower coincides with peak traffic. Motorists and two-wheeler riders may therefore face reduced visibility and slippery road conditions during intense spells.
Kolkata’s weather is consequently expected to retain a distinctly monsoonal character on Thursday: cloud-heavy skies, intermittent rain, occasional thunderstorms and persistent humidity, with no immediate indication of a sustained dry spell. The forecast also suggests that residents should remain prepared for abrupt weather changes rather than rely on a uniformly dry daytime outlook.
As September progresses, the city may continue to experience these alternating spells of rain and relatively warmer intervals. For now, Thursday’s forecast points towards another day when Kolkata’s skies could remain grey for much of the day, with the possibility of rain returning at short notice.
