Fire broke out on Wednesday morning at the South 24 Parganas district administration building located in the area of Alipore in the city of Kolkata. As a consequence of this incident, there was a major attempt by the firefighters to control the fire that had broken out and rescue a person who got trapped inside the multi-story governmental building. The fire occurred at 9.50 am in the eight-story building housing different offices of the state government.

Firefighters managed to save one individual who was trapped on the top floor during the process. After firefighting for hours, the fire had been contained, but there were still some places that were smoldering, reported the officials.

As reported by the fire officials, the fire broke out in the third floor and reached the fourth floor, spreading on numerous floors of the building with a heavy cloud of smoke. There were loud sounds coming from inside the building, while flames and smoke emerged from the windows of the building.

Furthermore, the eighth floor reportedly held the EVMs, thus causing further worry about them. Yet, there was no formal notification that there had been any kind of loss to such equipment due to the fire.

Preliminary findings suggest that a short circuit or an air conditioning system might be behind the whole problem. But then, according to the relevant authorities, the cause will be known once the fire has completely been put out.

One such property affected by the fire and that has received great publicity is that belonging to Jahangir Khan alias “Pushpa,” the notorious leader of Trinamool Congress from Diamond Harbour, who was recently arrested. Though no information regarding any foul play has been announced yet, the timing of the incident is being questioned in political spheres.

Owing to safety precautions, even the government officials who came in the evening found themselves denied entry into the premises.
