In its latest announcement made on Friday, the Election Commission of India stated that there will be no need for any repoll in connection with the first phase polling stations used during the West Bengal Assembly elections. This is after the recently concluded highly awaited voting exercise conducted on April 23, 2026.

Following the rigorous analysis of observers’ and field officers’ reports, the Election Commission made an informed decision not to hold a repoll since there were no significant disruptions or irregularities in the process during the voting conducted in all 16 districts that participated.

All Booths Maintained Full Security Stand

Peaceful conduct during the voting process has been attributed to the large number of central forces deployed and the extensive use of micro-observers in the process. The presence of central forces prevented the occurrence of common problems such as booth jamming and voter intimidation that result in the need for a repoll.

A three-point verification method was adopted to ensure that unauthorized people would not have easy access to the polling stations.

EVM Performance Remained Technically Flawless Throughout

There is unprecedented voter turnout in West Bengal during the first phase, which has reached 92.6 percent, the highest since independence. There is an opinion that no repoll requirement is evidence that the region is moving towards stable election practices.

The exclusion of almost 91 lakh names, who do not have eligibility to vote, from the electoral list is also behind these impressive numbers. By cleaning the rolls of dead voters and duplicate voters, the Commission has achieved this feat and thus avoided errors that usually lead to repolls.

After the completion of this first phase, there are now preparations to conduct the next one scheduled for April 29. The Commission will keep up its efforts at keeping a strong vigil and ensuring the safety and integrity of the poll process to have another successful phase free of repoll.

This success in conducting the first phase will serve as an indication for the rest of the 142 seats in West Bengal that will be polled. With the counting day approaching on May 4, the state is under strict scrutiny.
