The Indian political scene has taken a turn for the worse with the approaching Assembly Elections of the year 2026 in the states of West Bengal and Tamil Nadu. With the approach of the election date, political leaders all around the country and region have intensified their efforts to garner the support of the electorates, making the two states very crucial battlegrounds. The combination of promises regarding welfare, the politics of identity, and organizational efficiency is the quintessence of politics within each state as per today. Up until April 19, 2026, there have been a lot of happenings regarding campaigns.

Campaigning under High Stakes in West Bengal and Tamil Nadu

The election rhetoric in West Bengal is essentially based on a head-to-head contest between the incumbent government, Trinamool Congress (TMC), and the challenger BJP. The campaign has become largely a competition between welfare programs, with a special focus on women voters who are considered quite significant in number and influence. As the chief minister, Mamata Banerjee keeps emphasizing her Lakshmir Bhandar scheme’s achievements, BJP has come up with Matri Shakti Vandan Yojana to improve the financial position of women. This “plan vs plan” contest is being fought across rural and urban pockets of West Bengal with the help of top party men from both sides.

On the other hand, the situation in Tamil Nadu is no less intense. The DMK-led coalition in power known as the Secular Progressive Alliance is being strongly contested by the opposition consisting of the AIADMK and the BJP. The elections in Tamil Nadu are known to have rhetoric concerning regional sovereignty, federalism, and social justice. As the elections in the state are due on April 23, 2026, in a single phase of voting, the spotlight is now on the Western โ€œKonguโ€ region.

Strategic Visit by Amit Shah to Erode

Todayโ€™s highlight will be the town of Erode in Tamil Nadu, where Union Home Minister Amit Shah is set to conduct a mammoth road show in the town of Sivagiri, which is situated in the Modakkurichi Assembly constituency. This comes as part of a strategic plan for strengthening the presence of the NDA alliance in the textile capital of Tamil Nadu. Thousands of workers from both the parties have turned up to witness the arrival of this influential leader from BJP.

This comes after a series of high energy rallies headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Coimbatore and Nagercoil which highlights the BJPโ€™s plan to emerge as a major player in Tamil Nadu. As the Home Minister travels through Erodeโ€™s roads, the main issue still lies with the assurance provided by the NDA regarding economic development and efficient governance. In light of the impending โ€˜silence periodโ€™ during which campaign activities will cease, todayโ€™s campaign at Erode, alongside the campaigns taking place in West Bengal, is the last desperate attempt by the political leaders.
