Seoul Dispatches Envoy to Tehran to Protect Ships and Citizens Amid Hormuz Crisis
South Korea has appointed a special envoy to Tehran to coordinate the safety of its vessels and citizens amid escalating tensions in the Middle East, officials confirmed on April 10, 2026.
The Foreign Ministry named former ambassador Chung Byung-ha as the envoy, tasking him with ensuring safe passage for South Korean ships and nationals affected by the ongoing crisis linked to the Strait of Hormuz.
The decision came a day after Foreign Minister Cho Hyun held a phone call with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi to discuss regional developments and bilateral concerns.
Seoul said the envoy will engage Iranian authorities to secure guarantees for the safe movement of vessels and protection of citizens, while also exchanging views on the broader Middle East situation.
At least 26 South Korea-linked vessels remain stranded in the Strait of Hormuz, according to Yonhap News Agency, as the waterway continues to face severe disruptions.
Iran has indicated it may allow controlled passage through the strait in coordination with its armed forces but warned that vessels attempting to cross without permission could face attacks.
The crisis stems from a broader conflict that began in late February after the United States and Israel launched airstrikes on Iran, prompting Tehran to tighten control over one of the worldโs most critical shipping routes.
The disruptions have left dozens of ships immobilized and raised global concerns over energy supplies and maritime security, as the strait handles a significant share of global oil trade.
South Korean authorities said they continue to monitor the situation closely and prioritize the safety of approximately 170 crew members linked to the stranded vessels.
With diplomatic efforts intensifying, Seoul aims to prevent further risks to its nationals and shipping interests while maintaining stable relations with regional stakeholders during the ongoing crisis
