Battle for Bengal: Modi Takes the Reins in BJP’s Do-or-Die Push

A high-octane onslaught in West Bengal has been officially kicked off by India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi, marking an important move upping the ante in the campaign with the eastern state gearing up for its multi-phased Assembly elections. Delivering a speech to thousands of people at Cooch Behar’s Rashmela Maidan on April 5, the Prime Minister emphasized that the 2026 elections would be a decisive battle and vowed to “drive out fear” from the state after years of “lawlessness and misgovernance” caused by the incumbent Trinamool Congress (TMC).
“Maha Jungle Raj” on Target:
Modi’s visit signals the onset of BJP’s relentless onslaught in the eastern state where all the key leaders of the party have been deployed in a bid to win power in the state. In his speech, the Prime Minister directly targeted the incumbent government of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee citing the incident where judicial officials were reportedly held hostage by a mob in Malda. The PM referred to the episode as a manifestation of a “TMC sponsored maha jungle raj.”

Modi tried to project the polls as a clear-cut choice between the “bhoy” propagated by the TMC and the “bharosa” extended by the BJP. In addition to that, the BJP accused the state government of shielding illegal immigrants from arrest in order to change demography, assuring the electorate that the BJP government will take care of border security and CAA.
Campaign Strategy with Stars:

To sustain this positive energy among the voters, the BJP has announced the names of 40 star campaigners. Although Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit the states of Tamluk, Asansol, and organize a grand rally at Kolkata in the coming days, he will be accompanied by prominent personalities such as Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath.

High Stakes and Important Dates:
The electoral contest takes place amidst heavy political polarization. Elections are scheduled for April 23 and April 29, with the voting count taking place on May 4, 2026. The BJP sees the upcoming 2026 election as an absolute “do or die” chance to increase their reach in the East. In response, TMC has strengthened their welfare-oriented “Ma, Mati, Manush” stance by claiming that the Center was using Central bodies to scare opposition parties.
As the Prime Minister declared that every wrong deed done by the ruling government will be probed in the aftermath of elections, the political air in Bengal is charged like never before. It remains to be seen whether the BJP’s hard-hitting campaign tactics bear any fruit or if Mamata Banerjee manages to secure a fourth consecutive term at the helm of Bengal.
