Investigative Reporting on R.N. Ravi in Bengal: Why is the New Governor Making the State Government Nervous?

West Bengal Governor C.V Anand Bose recently resigned from his post on March 5, 2026. He submitted his papers to the respected President of India: Droupadi Murmu. He mentioned that his resignation was a conscious decision after serving the office more than three years. His resignation was submitted to New Delhi rather than in West Bengal. But, the Former Governor of West Bengal, C.V Anand Bose resignation incident was observed as a deep shocking news for the current West Bengal ruling party: All India Trinamool Congress (AITMC). West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee posted her views regarding his resignation expressing this as a deep concern and shock during this upcoming election of 2026. Her statement reflects a high-stakes political confrontation between the State Government and Central Government.  The key concerns observed inside her statement was:

Political Interference: She expresses concern that the leadership change at Raj Bhavan is timed to serve certain political interests just before the 2026 State Assembly elections.

Erosion of Federalism: Mamata Banerjee accused that the Central Government is acting as a boss not as a partner. The Central government is taking big decisions such as appointing a new Governor and not taking any kind of opinions from the State government. According to her, this is undermining the spirit of the Indian Constitution. She observed this step as breaking rules of friendship by not consulting her. She also observed this as weakening balance, since India is a federal country and therefore an unstable situation.

Reaction of Mamata Banerjee regarding R.N Ravi Appointment as the New Governor of West Bengal

Mamata Banerjee issued a political warning to the newly appointed Governor R.N Ravi. In the meantime, Mamata Banerjee declared a dharna (a sit in protest) in Esplanade focusing on the SIR issue for 7 days at the Esplanade Metro Channel in Kolkata on March 7, 2026. From there, she politically warned R.N Ravi, the new Governor of West Bengal, by saying that: West Bengal is a different place. She claimed to know about Ravi’s tumultuous tenure in Tamil Nadu, where he was frequently at loggerheads with Chief Minister M. K. Stalin.

She believes that in other states, like Tamil Nadu, the Governor acted like a member of the BJP political party instead of being neutral. She is making it clear that if the new Governor tries to interfere with her government or treat his office like a political headquarters, she will fight back strongly. She wants to protect the state’s power to run its own affairs without outside pressure. Mamata Banerjee is tense and fearful observing R.N Ravi will become a troublemaker for her. She showed deep anger and felt threatened, worrying that he will use his power to block her work and help her political rivals that too right before the 2026 elections.

This concern is observed to be mainly due to his past track records. R.N Ravi has Zero Tolerance for Political Violence, he is a security veteran. This makes Mamata Banerjee fears because he will use these skills for scrutinizing state administration specifically regarding allegations of corruption or illegal immigration which are frequent flashpoints between State and the Centre. She also referred to his tenure in Tamil Nadu and highlights of fear regarding legislative gridlock.

Reason for Mamata Banerjee is Nervous: A Problem Solver or a Troublemaker?

Ravi’s history of taking on mining mafias and organised crime further indicates that he may target the syndicate culture (local cartels) that the opposition frequently accuses the AITMC of protecting.

Security Expertise vs. Political Violence: Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee fears Ravi will use skills related to Intelligence & Investigative, Counter-Terror & Security Strategy  and Problem Solver & Negotiator Approach or Specialized Institutional Transformation to scrutinize the state administration’s handling of political violence and illegal immigration frequent points of contention between the State and the Centre.

Targeting Organized Crime vs. Syndicate Culture: The state government worries he will target the syndicate culture (local cartels). The opposition frequently accuses the ruling AITMC of protecting these groups, making Ravi’s expertise a direct threat to these local power structures.

Anti-Corruption Focus vs. High-Profile Scams: West Bengal is currently embroiled in several high-profile corruption cases, including the SSC Recruitment Scam, Ration Distribution Scam, and Coal Smuggling Case. The government fears Ravi will use his office to block work or provide leverage to political rivals by highlighting these scandals before the 2026 elections.

However, the main difference is that the State Government views his intervention as a Political Interference whereas R.N Ravi is a Problem Solver who views political instability as a security threat aiming to destabilize her governance before a crucial election in 2026.
