India vs South Africa

India bottled up at 111, as South Africa won their first match in the Super 8s

In the third match of the Super 8s of the T20 World Cup 2026, India lost the match to South Africa by a staggering margin of 76 runs. The match was played in the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad, where India lost the 2023 ODI World Cup to Australia.

South Africa won the toss and elected to bat first. The proteans lost 3 quick wickets in the first 4 overs, resulting in a 20-3 scoreline. However, the partnership of David Miller 63 (35) and Dewald Brevis 45 (29) seemed unshakable. Along with Tristan Stubbs 44 (24), South Africa managed a good total of 187/7 at the end of the first innings.

However, in the second innings, India lost the first wicket within the 4th ball of the game without putting a single run on the board, followed by the second wicket at just 5 runs. Things got worse as India lost the 3rd wicket before the end of the 5th over. The decline continued with the fall of wickets in the 8th and 9th overs, successively, with a scoreline of 51/5 in the 9.1 over. Unexpectedly, the match detoriated beyond repair in the 15th over when South African bowler Washington Sundar took 3 wickets in a single over. Hardik Pandya 18(17), Rinku Singh 0(2), and Arshdeep Singh 1(2) lost their wickets in the 15th over, bringing the total to 88/8 in the 15th over. By the beginning of the 20th over, India lost all wickets and ended their batting at 111/10.

The Indian batting lineup was bottled up in one of the most important matches of the tournament, while on the other hand, the South Africans took their revenge of the 2024 T20 World Cup Final.

In the post-match conference, Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav said, โ€œSometimes, you have to think you cannot win the game in the powerplay, but you can lose it. Did not have the partnerships we needed. We could have batted better. Itโ€™s part of the game. We will learn from it, sit back and bounce back. Hopefully, bat well, bowl well and field well. Keep it simple. That is what we will try to do.โ€

David Miller was crowned โ€˜the Man of the Matchโ€™ in this match. South Africa will face West Indies (Feb 26) and Zimbabwe (March 1) in their following fixture in this tournament.

After this match, Indiaโ€™s net run rate in the Super 8s group has dipped to -3.800. To turn things around, India needs to win the upcoming two matches against Zimbabwe (Feb 26) and West Indies (March 1) to book their slots in the semi-finals.
