WB Govt Files FIRs Against 4 Poll Officials After EC’s 6-Month Nudge

The West Bengal government has finally registered FIRs against four poll officials, six months after the Election Commission (EC) directed them to do so. The officials, including two Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) and two Assistant Electoral Registration Officers (AEROs), were accused of adding over a hundred fictitious names to voter lists in Baruipur Purba and Moyna Assembly constituencies.

The EC had initially ordered the suspension and prosecution of the officials in August 2025, but the state government had resisted, citing “unintentional mistakes”. However, after the EC summoned Chief Secretary Nandini Chakraborty to Delhi, the state government complied with the order.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has expressed support for the officials, stating that they were not given a chance to defend themselves. She also criticized the EC, calling it a “Torture Commission”.
