ECI Suspends 7 Bengal Poll Officials Over SIR Irregularities

Seven election officials in West Bengal have been suspended following action by the Election Commission of India over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

In a directive issued to Chief Secretary Nandini Chakraborty late Sunday, the commission asked the state government to immediately place the officers under suspension and begin departmental proceedings against them. The poll body cited serious misconduct, negligence in duty and misuse of statutory powers in connection with the revision process, and sought prompt compliance reports.

Two of the officials, Satyajit Das and Joydeep Kundu, were serving as AEROs in the Canning Purbo Assembly constituency of South 24 Parganas. The remaining five were posted across Debra in Paschim Medinipur, three constituencies in Murshidabad (Samserganj, Suti and Farakka), and Maynaguri in Jalpaiguri.

The Commission has instructed that disciplinary action be initiated without delay, making it clear that accountability in the ongoing voter roll exercise will be strictly enforced.
