Mithun Targets Mamata: “Says She Won’t Let the Home Minister Enter, Has She Started Thinking This Is Bangladesh?”

Kolkata : Actor-turned-politician Mithun Chakraborty on Friday launched a rajor sharp attack on West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee over her recent comments regarding Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s visit to the state. Speaking at a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) event in Cooch Behar, Mithun questioned whether the Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader “had started considering Bengal as a separate country like Bangladesh,” after she reportedly said that she would not allow the Home Minister to enter the state without permission.

Mithun, who joined the BJP ahead of the 2021 Assembly election, accused Mamata Banerjee of undermining federal principles by treating central leaders as “outsiders.” He said that West Bengal is an integral part of India and no chief minister has the authority to decide who can or cannot visit from the Union government. “This is not your private kingdom. Bengal belongs to the people of India,” Mithun mentioned.

Countering Mamata Banerjee’s remarks on Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Mithun issued a warning of his own ,“Just once announce publicly that you will not allow India’s Home Minister to enter Bengal. Then we will show what we are capable of. As long as people like Mithun Chakraborty have a drop of blood in their body, this state will never become Bangladesh. We believe in the Constitution, and that is why we have kept ourselves under control,.” The BJP leader also questioned, “Why do you have such love for Bangladesh? Even when protests are held here over incidents there, people are beaten up.”

It is clear that he was once again targeting Mamata Banerjee’s government over the issue of the lathi-charge during protests by several Hindutva organisations at Beckbagan in Kolkata, which were held against the killing of Bangladeshi Hindu youth Dipu Chandra Das. In a sarcastic tone, he further said, “You keep dreaming. While you are lost in your dreams, we will enter from behind and establish our rule in Bengal.”

He also attacked the state government on governance, claiming there was no enterprise, industry, jobs or adequate healthcare infrastructure in Bengal. “Except for corruption, there is nothing in this state,” he alleged.

Political observers see this exchange as an early sign of the intense campaigning for the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections with both the TMC and BJP sharpening their rhetorics. TMC leaders have defended Mamata Banerjee’s remark as a protest against excessive interference by the central government, while BJP leaders, including Mithun Chakraborty, have described it as proof of the Chief Minister’s insecurity and authoritarian style.
