Kolkata-Guwahati gets a Midnight Makeover with Vande Bharat Sleeper Launch

The long-anticipated new era in the modernization of India Railways is soon to begin when Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurates a significant component of this effort- “Vande Bharat Sleeper train service”- later this month from Kolkata.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi set to launch a major milestone in Indian Railways’ modernization drive- the country’s first Vande Bharat Sleeper train service- later this month from Howrah(Kolkata), Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced on Thursday. The inaugural Vande Bharat Sleeper will run on the Kolkata-Guwahati(Kamakhya) route, covering a distance of about 966 kilometers and connecting eastern India with the Northeast. The launch is expected by January 17-20, 2026, with the exact date being finalised soon.

Unlike existing Vande Bharat trains- knowns primarily for high-speed daytime chair car services- this new variant is designed for long-distance overnight travel, providing enhanced comfort and modern facilities usually seen or express on express or premium trains. The fully air-conditioned sleeper set comprises 16 coaches:

  • 11 AC 3-tier
  • 4 AC 2-tier
  • 1 AC First Class

Although the train is capable of speeds up to 180 km/h, it is expected to operate at a maximum of 130 km/h on this service for safety considerations with a total capacity of 823 passengers.

Comfort, safety and affordability

Passengers can expect modern amenities and enhanced comfort, including:

  • Ergonomically designed sleeper berths and superior suspension for smoother rides
  • Automatic doors and noise-insulated interiors
  • Kavach anti-collision and advanced safety systems
  • Improved toilets and onboard service features

In a bid to keep travel affordable, fares have been announced at competitive levels compared to air travel on the same route:

  • AC 3-tier: Rs 2,300
  • AC 2-tier: Rs 3,000
  • AC First Class: Rs 3,600 (Fares include meals on some services)

Strategic Importance and Future Expansion

The introduction of the Vande Bharat Sleeper marks a significant expansion of the Vande Bharat family, bridging the gap between high-speed day trains and comfortable long-distance services. It also symbolises Indian Railways’ push to modernise overnight rail travel and enhance connectivity across regions. Railway officials say this service is just the beginning; several more Vande Bharat Sleeper trains are expected to be rolled out across the country during 2026, promising faster and world-class overnight travel options for passenger.

Railway Minister, Ashwini Vaishnaw says, “It is a big milestone for the country. This year will be the year of reforms for the Indian Railways and Vande Bharat sleeper trains have the imprints of it. We got confidence from the Vande Bharat Chair Car train and implemented the learning in this. It is just the beginning.” He also added, “The train running from Guwahati will have Assamese (cuisine) and the train running from Kolkata will serve Bangla food. A train has three most important systems- bogie, propulsion system and vehicle control. All these three things were designed in India. So it’s completely a made-in-India train. We are hoping to achieve perfection in this by 2029. After that, we will be in a position to export it. The total cost per coach of this train in Rs 8-8.5 crore, which is lower than a metro coach, which usually is Rs 10-10.5 crore.”

What it means for Travellers

For passengers on the Kolkata-Guwahati route and beyond, the Vande Bharat Sleeper is poised to offer:

  • Reduced travel time compared to conventional express trains
  • Higher comfort levels on overnight journeys
  • Affordable pricing for air-conditioned long-distance rail travel

With the flagg-off ceremony set in Kolkata by the Prime Minister, the service is expected to be a key highlight in Indian Railways’ New Year intiatives. The Railway Minister said, “This achievement is a major milestone….The Vande Bharat sleeper train will provide passengers with world-class facilities, safety, and a modern travel experience on long-distance overnight journeys” at a press conference in New Delhi.
