‘Book Your Tickets Now,’ Ashwini Vaishnaw Confirms Launch Date of India’s First Bullet Train

Indian Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Thursday 1st January has said that India’s first bullet train service will begin operations on 15th of August, 2027. This will mark a major milestone in India’s railway infrastructure development. Addressing the press briefing, Ashwini Vaishnaw said “book your tickets now.” His statement underlined the government’s confidence in meeting the timeline of the high-speed rail project that has been undergoing for several years. This announcement also confirms that the Mumbai–Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor will be the first route in India to host bullet train services.

According to official information, the Mumbai–Ahmedabad 508 kilometers corridor will connect major cities such as Mumbai, Thane, Vapi, Surat, Bharuch, Vadodara, and Ahmedabad. This is expected to save travel time. The National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) is implementing this project with technical and financial assistance from Japan. This project was incorporated on 12th February 2016, under the Companies Act, 2013 with an object to finance, construct, maintain and manage the High Speed Rail Corridor in India. The estimated cost of the project was INR 1,08,000 crore. These bullet trains used Japanese Shinkansen technology and are designed to run at the speed of up to 320 km per hour, significantly this will reduce travel time between Mumbai and Ahmedabad.

As described by the government, the bullet train project is being seen as a transformative step for Indian Railways, aiming to modernise the transport infrastructure and boost regional economic growth along the corridor. Final stage construction work is currently undergoing across Maharashtra and Gujarat. Although the government faced challenges related to land acquisition and construction delays earlier, Ashwini Vaishnaw has confirmed the 15th August, 2027 as the launch date. This project is expected to set the foundation for future high-speed rail corridors across India.
