Suspended TMC MLA Humayun Kabir launches Janata Unnayan Party ahead Of 2026 Bengal Election

On Monday, suspended TMC (Trinamool Congress) MLA Humayun Kabir announced the formation of a new political outfit, the Janata Unnayan Party, to set the stage for a direct political battle with the Chief Minister Mamta Banerjee ahead of Bengal Assembly elections.
Kabir, the MLA from Bharatpur was suspended by the ruling party of Bengal amid the controversy over his role in laying the foundation stone for a Babri-style mosque in Murshidabad district.
Addressing a public meeting in Beldanga, he declared that his new party’s primary mission would be to remove Mamta Banerjee from power.
He said “ Mamata Banerjee will not be sworn in as chief minister in 2026; she will be the ex-chief minister. She is no longer the same person I knew and is now beyond the reach of the common man”.
At the meeting, Kabir also announced that the Janata Unnayan Party would contest the 2026 assembly elections and named a few candidates his party plans to field. He revealed that he himself would contest from two constituencies in Murshidabad district- Rejinagar and Beldanga.
The launch of the new party comes at a politically sensitive time with assembly polls due in less than six months. Kabir’s move is expected to add a new dimension to the political contest in Murshidabad district where he is considered to have immense local influence.
While, TMC party has not officially responded to Kabir’s announcement. Political observers see his suspension and subsequent rebellion as another sign of churn within the state’s political landscape as West Bengal heads towards the high-stakes 2026 election.
