Messi Mess: BJP Alleges Political Misuse, Demands Probe After Chaos at Kolkata Stadium

Kolkata: The fallout of Saturday’s chaotic football spectacle involving Lionel Messi has snowballed into a full-blown political controversy. It is now widely referred to as the Messi Mess. The BJP claims that the ruling Trinamool Congress is using the global football icon for electoral mileage. They aim to gain advantages ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections.

Anger simmered across the city following disorder at Salt Lake Stadium. Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari on Sunday demanded a court-monitored investigation. He alleged a “massive commercial and political racket” behind the event. The BJP sought the arrest of state ministers Aroop Biswas and Sujit Bose. They also demanded a refund of what it called “exorbitant” ticket prices charged to fans. Addressing a press conference in Kolkata, Adhikari accused the Trinamool Congress of exploiting Bengal’s love for football. He claimed they used Lionel Messi for political gain. “This Messi Mess was not accidental. The Trinamool Congress tried to forcefully use people’s love for football. He alleged that this happened just months before elections. Moreover, the football icon was projected as a political asset.

The Opposition leader highlighted alleged overpricing of essential items at Salt Lake Stadium. He cited this as evidence of systemic mismanagement. “Who permitted such pricing inside a government-controlled venue? This cannot happen without administrative clearance,” he said. He reiterated the demand for a court-monitored investigation into the decision-making process behind the event. Adhikari was joined at the press conference by All India Football Federation president Kalyan Chaubey. The BJP described his presence as significant. It was important in highlighting governance concerns related to sports administration. Calling for public accountability, Adhikari urged citizens to channel public anger over the Messi Mess into peaceful democratic protest.

Questioning the state government’s response, Adhikari said the inquiry announced by Mamata Banerjee did not inspire confidence. “Committees formed by the same administration cannot investigate themselves objectively,” he said. He alleged that the first information report appeared to focus on operational lapses while avoiding questions of political responsibility. The BJP leader again stressed that only a court-monitored investigation would ensure impartial scrutiny. He further alleged that individuals linked to the Trinamool Congress were being shielded. Meanwhile, chief organiser Satadru Dutta had been made the sole accused. “Why was responsibility fixed only on one organiser? Why were senior officials not questioned?” Adhikari asked, describing the handling of the Messi Mess as selective.

The controversy escalated further. BJP leader Shankudev Panda wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He sought an Enforcement Directorate probe into alleged financial irregularities linked to the event. In his letter, Panda alleged misuse of public funds. He also mentioned black-market ticket sales. Additionally, he talked about illegal cash circulation associated with the Lionel Messi programme. Opposition criticism extended beyond the BJP. CPI(M) leader Sujan Chakraborty dismissed the inquiry committee announced by Mamata Banerjee. He found it inadequate. He questioned why ministers linked to the Messi Mess had not been summoned and whether affected spectators would be compensated. “Administrative accountability must be fixed at the highest level,” Chakraborty said.

The Congress also joined the criticism. State president Subhankar Sarkar highlighted the situation at Salt Lake Stadium. He compared it to better-managed international football events elsewhere in the country. Sarkar said governance failures had damaged Bengal’s reputation as a football-loving state. He promised corrective action if his party came to power. Responding to the Opposition’s charges, TMC MP Saugata Roy accused the BJP of politicising a sporting event. “An inquiry has already been ordered by the Chief Minister. It is premature to draw conclusions,” Roy said, adding that the Trinamool Congress did not support mixing politics with sports.

Soon after the incident, Mamata Banerjee issued a public apology on social media. She expressed regret over the inconvenience caused to football fans. She announced a three-member inquiry committee. The committee will examine lapses related to crowd management. It will also look into ticketing and security arrangements at Salt Lake Stadium. The committee, headed by Chief Secretary Manoj Pant and Home Secretary Nandini Chakraborty, inspected the venue on Sunday. Officials familiar with the process said the panel would review CCTV footage. They would also examine vendor contracts and crowd control protocols. This review will take place before submitting its report.

The BJP dismissed the exercise as damage control. The party reiterated its demand for a court-monitored investigation into what it continues to describe as the Messi Mess. Investigations are proceeding, and political exchanges are intensifying. The controversy surrounding Lionel Messi, administrative oversight, and public accountability threatens to overshadow Bengal’s sporting aspirations. With elections approaching, the Messi Mess has become a politically charged issue. It could shape debates on governance, transparency, and the management of high-profile public events in the state.
