West Bengal Voter List Controversy: A Clash at the CEO’s Office

Kolkata: The event happened on December 1, 2025, in the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) office in West Bengal, Kolkata. This has turned into a battlefield as the BJP activists led by the opposition leader, Suvendu Adhikari, came to present a deputation. They came just after a group of Booth Level Officials (BLOs) were protesting.

The event was based on the accusations of high irregularities in Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral roll. The BJP alleged that the list was being compromised with illegal Bangladeshi infiltrators and dead voters. They charged state machinery, such as AERO, ERO and Indian Political Action Committee (I -PAC) with corruption and manipulation. Meanwhile, the BLOs whom the BJP allege have the Trinamool (TMC) as their accomplice protested against intolerable workload and lack of time to enumerate. Others required an increase in honorariums and an increase of the seven days given.

The events took place when Suvendu Adhikari and other BJP MLAs came to the office of the CEO. The protesting BLOs were said to have blocked their entrance leading to a tense faceoff. A verbal clash ensued. The BJP claimed that the protestors were TMC goons that were being used to break their meeting and the BLOs claimed that the BJP was out to terrorise them and in collusion with the Election Commission to stack out legitimate voters. Barricades were put up by police to divide the two parties amidst slogans and high drama that went on overnight. Days had passed in the BLO protest, during which there were scuffles with police and also a security breach in the office of the CEO and as a result the Election Commission of India (ECI) asked the Kolkata Police Commissioner to provide a report on the severe security lapse.

BJP party argues that SIR exercise is being perverted to form a vote bank to TMC by accommodating illegal intruders, especially in districts that face Bangladesh. Their requirement was an audit of the estimated 1.25 crore entries done within a given period of three days. They also claimed that the TMC orchestrated the BLO protests so as to cause havoc and derail the process.

The TMC and protesting BLOs maintain that the BJP is trying to carry out a mass disenfranchisement of the honest voters in an effort they claim are being applied in other states. The primary complaints of the BLOs are work overloads, slow online portal, and lack of time. The pressure has been observed to trigger some tragic cases of suicide among BLOs. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee supported the demands of BLOs blaming the ECI on its unplanned and hasty execution of the process. TMC national general secretary Abhishek Bannerjee argued that equitable SIR process would in actual sense give the TMC more seats in the assembly.

The incident brings out a highly polarized political environment within West Bengal in the context of the important electoral roll revision exercise. The main problem is the essential lack of trust between the main competitors, the BJP and TMC, as each party accuses the other of vying in the democratic process to gain votes. Though the work of the ECI and state CEO is to deliver an accurate voter list, there are deep-seated reasons why the working conditions of BLOs and the high-stakes political allegations which stir tension and street-level violence complicate the situation. The dispute surrounding the voter list integrity highlights the cut-throat politics West Bengal has turned into before the upcoming election.
