SIR ISSUE : Mamata and Abhishek hit the streets over the SIR issue! The Chief Minister warns, “No leniency if discipline is broken” — what else did she say?

Kolkata : A little after 2:30 PM on Tuesday, the Trinamool Congress’s mega rally began from the statue of B.R. Ambedkar on Red Road. The rally was led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and the party’s All India General Secretary, Abhishek Banerjee. Mamata Banerjee was seen walking with a copy of the Constitution in hand.

Chief Minister issues a stern warning to party leaders

Before the rally began, Mamata Banerjee addressed her party leaders with a strict message of discipline. She said, “No matter how big a leader or minister you are, let me make this clear — do not try to show your face on TV by coming to the front. Do not push from behind. I will remember everyone.” On this day, Mamata Banerjee not only sent a political message but also reinforced the importance of party discipline.

The rally is set to move down Rani Rashmoni Road, pass through KC Das crossing, and end at Jorasanko Thakur Bari — symbolically connecting Ambedkar to Rabindranath. According to the ruling party, this symbolizes their message: “Save the Constitution, protect democracy.” Ambedkar stands for the Constitution and human values, while Rabindranath Tagore represents Bengali identity.

To prevent overcrowding, Abhishek Banerjee had earlier instructed that no one from distant parts of the state should attend. Only leaders and workers from Kolkata, North and South 24 Parganas, and Howrah districts would be present.

Interestingly, this rally took place on the same day that the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list began across the state. Since morning, Booth Level Officers (BLOs) have been visiting homes to verify voter information. In this context, the Trinamool Congress hit the streets to protest. Both Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek had earlier claimed that it’s impossible to complete the entire process within such a short time and expressed concern that genuine voters’ names might be left out. Abhishek Banerjee stated firmly, “If even one genuine voter’s name is deleted in the name of SIR, we will go to Delhi and launch a larger movement.”

By the time the rally reached Jorasanko, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee had arrived at the stage. Mamata was expected to address the people of the state from there. Religious leaders from different communities and several Tollywood celebrities were also present on stage.
