John Bolton Criticizes Trump’s Tariffs on India, Calls for Renewed Talks

Washington D.C. / New Delhi: Former U.S. National Security Advisor John Bolton has called the tariffs imposed on India during Donald Trump’s presidency a “mistake” that complicated negotiations. He urged India and the U.S. to resume talks, reduce tariffs, and rebuild trust.

Bolton’s Remarks

Tariff policy on India under Trump was “incoherent” and counterproductive.

25% tariffs on Indian imports were collateral damage from Western sanctions on Russia, even though China faced no penalties.

India’s reliance on Russian oil and gas should be reduced through a gradual, economically sound transition.

Bolton emphasized that personal rapport between leaders (Trump and PM Narendra Modi) could help revive cooperation.

India–U.S. Relations and the Quad

Bolton highlighted the importance of the Quad alliance (India, U.S., Japan, Australia) to counter the China–Russia alignment. He suggested Trump should call PM Modi, fix relations, and visit India for the next Quad summit.

On Pakistan & Kashmir

Bolton referred to Pakistan’s statement that Trump had no role in easing tensions after the Kashmir attack, stressing that disputes between India and Pakistan have historically been handled bilaterally.

Broader Outlook

Bolton also dismissed claims that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza, while noting that Trump often seeks credit in global affairs, sometimes even eyeing a Nobel Peace Prize.
