Sunil Meena Returns To India, Faces ATS Questioning In Jharkhand

On August 23, 2025, Jharkhand’s Anti-Terrorist Squad successfully extradited Mayank Singh (alias Sunil Meena) from Azerbaijan, triggering the state’s first-ever criminal extradition. Flying in under tight security, the ATS team, including Superintendent of Police Rishav Kumar Jha, landed in Ranchi and immediately produced the gangster before the Ramgarh court. He has now begun a six-day interrogation into a web of crime, including murder, attempted murder, and extortion targeting businessmen, railway contractors, and coal transporters.
Interrogation Opens New Windows into Organized Crime
Meena has over 40 murder-related, extortion, and threat cases registered against him across several Jharkhand districts—Ranchi, Ramgarh, Giridih, Palamu, and Hazaribag. The ATS is probing his links to gangs like Lawrence Bishnoi and Aman Sahu, suspects he allegedly coordinated with from abroad while managing criminal operations remotely. His role as a connective link between outfits makes this interrogation especially critical.
His extradition followed exhaustive legal and diplomatic work based on a Red Corner Notice and Interpol coordination. In October 2024, officials detained Meena in Baku. His return allowed ATS officers to present him before the Ramgarh court, where they secured judicial remand for further questioning. This breakthrough sets a new precedent for cooperative international crime-fighting by Jharkhand police.
Bringing Justice Home Demands More Than Paperwork
Meena’s extradition symbolizes hope, yet it also raises red flags. We celebrate the power of cross-border coordination, but even that might not hold strong if our local system is weak. When someone continues to orchestrate violence across states and from foreign soil, we must ask whether our police, courts, and civic watch can keep up. Now is the moment to harden our processes, not just to interrogate gangsters, but to make sure they don’t slip away again.
