Police Nab Contract Killer in Varanasi Builder Murder Case

On August 27, 2025, the Special Operation Group and Sarnath police apprehended four suspects in connection with the murder of builder Mahendra Gautam, whose life ended in a land deal gone sour. Investigators also arrested Mukim, the hitman and arms supplier, after they shot him in the leg moments before his apprehension as he arrived to collect the remaining payment for the contract killing.

Deals and Betrayal

The foundation of this tragedy lies in a failed land transaction. Gautam allegedly barged into a deal already settled by Jogendra Yadav alias Fattu, Sampurnanand Shukla alias Chandan Shukla, and Shyam Prakash Rajbhar alias Rakhe Pradhan. He not only disrupted the agreement but also reneged on a promised payment. As tensions escalated, what started as a business conflict turned lethal. The trio arranged Gautam’s elimination by egging Mukim on with an initial ₹50,000, expecting a final payment of ₹4.5 lakh once their plan concluded.

Police’s Action

The Varanasi police acted with remarkable speed once suspicions turned toward a conspiracy behind Mahendra Gautam’s murder. Within hours of identifying leads, officers tracked down the suspects using phone call records and surveillance footage from the vicinity of the crime. Their swift coordination not only narrowed the list of suspects but also helped prevent the killers from fleeing the district.

During raids at safehouses linked to the accused, the police recovered two country-made pistols, live cartridges, and mobile phones that contained incriminating communication records. Forensic teams confirmed that the arrested men had recently discharged the seized firearms, strengthening the case against them. Investigators pieced together the timeline of the crime and concluded that they had deliberately targeted Gautam in what they described as a “carefully planned execution” tied to a bitter land dispute.

The confessions of the arrested men further supported the physical evidence. They admitted that rival parties ordered a contract killing after prolonged tensions escalated between them and Gautam over disputed plots. Investigators recovered weapons and traced digital trails, which painted a clear picture of a calculated crime rather than a spontaneous one.
