Mumbai weather alert: Schools Closed as Nanded Cloudburst Hits.

Mumbai, August 18, 2025

Heavy rain battered Mumbai on Monday, bringing the city to a standstill. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for Mumbai, Thane, and Raigad, warning of extremely heavy showers for the next 48 hours. The downpour caused flooding, major traffic jams, and widespread disruption of train services. Meanwhile, a cloudburst in Nanded district left at least five people missing, further intensifying the weather crisis across Maharashtra. Authorities ordered schools and colleges to shut, urging citizens to remain indoors.

Red Alert Across Mumbai Metropolitan Region

The IMD predicted rainfall exceeding 200 millimeters in 24 hours in several districts. In response, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) directed schools and colleges to suspend operations. Afternoon shift schools were asked not to reopen, while morning schools released students earlier than usual. State education officials said this decision aimed to prevent students from traveling during peak rainfall hours, ensuring safety amid worsening weather conditions.

Mumbai Weather Alert Disrupts Normal Life

Road and Rail Transport Hit Hard

Relentless rainfall submerged arterial roads including the Western Express Highway, Eastern Freeway, and parts of Link Road. Vehicles broke down in knee-deep water, forcing commuters to abandon cars and bikes. BEST bus services reported over 70 route diversions due to impassable roads.

Train services, Mumbaiโ€™s lifeline, also took a severe hit. The Central and Western Railway networks reported delays of up to 45 minutes as water accumulated on tracks near Kurla, Sion, and Andheri. Passengers stranded at stations expressed frustration as local trains slowed to a crawl. Metro services, however, continued without major disruption, providing some relief.

Mumbai Weather Alert Extends to Nanded

Cloudburst Creates Flash Flood Situation

In Mukhed taluka of Nanded district, a sudden cloudburst triggered flash floods in several villages. At least five people were reported missing after strong currents swept them away. Rescue operations focused on evacuating residents from low-lying areas, particularly near the overflowing Lendi dam.

Local officials raised concerns over the damโ€™s increasing water level. Villagers living downstream were moved to temporary shelters as a precaution. The cloudburst also damaged farmlands, causing crop losses at a critical stage of cultivation. Farmers urged the government for immediate compensation.

Mumbai Weather Alert Prompts Emergency Operations

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) deployed additional teams to Mumbai and Nanded. In the city, workers cleared clogged drains and pumped out water from critical junctions. Emergency teams worked in Chembur, Dadar, and Andheri, where waterlogging was most severe.

In Nanded, rescue teams used inflatable boats to evacuate stranded families. The district administration coordinated with the police and fire brigade to ensure swift relief. Maharashtraโ€™s Chief Minister held a high-level meeting to review the situation, promising continuous monitoring and quick assistance.

Government Response and Public Advisory

State authorities issued advisories asking citizens to stay indoors unless necessary. They also warned people not to venture near sea-facing promenades like Marine Drive and Juhu Beach due to high tide alerts. Social media platforms circulated emergency helpline numbers for stranded residents.

The Maharashtra government also appealed to companies to allow employees to work from home. Medical teams remained on standby to handle waterborne diseases, which often spike after floods. Civic officials urged residents to boil drinking water and store essentials in case of extended disruptions.

Broader Impact of the Weather Crisis

The heavy rainfall not only affected daily commuters but also disrupted businesses and small traders. Vegetable vendors and shopkeepers in flooded areas reported huge losses as stock got damaged. Fishermen remained off the coast due to rough seas, impacting supplies to local markets.

Flight operations at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport were partially disrupted, with at least 22 flights delayed and two diverted. Passengers faced long waits at terminals as airlines adjusted schedules to avoid risks during heavy downpours.

Mumbai Weather Alert Raises Safety Concerns

The ongoing Mumbai weather alert highlights the cityโ€™s recurring struggle with urban flooding. Despite repeated warnings, inadequate drainage and unchecked urbanization continue to expose residents to severe risks. With the IMD forecasting more rain in the coming days, both Mumbai and Nanded face a tense wait. The timely response of disaster management teams has prevented larger tragedies so far, but long-term planning remains crucial. Citizens now look toward authorities for sustainable flood control measures to prevent such crises from repeating every monsoon.
