Nationwide UPI Glitch Halts Digital Payments for Millions

On August 7, 2025, a major UPI outage disrupted digital payments across India. Users faced issues on Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, and other apps. Banks like SBI, HDFC, Kotak Mahindra, and Bank of Baroda also saw failures. Millions couldn’t complete transactions, causing widespread frustration.

Complaints Surge as Transactions Fail Across India

From 7:30 PM, users began posting complaints. By 8:30 PM, platforms like Downdetector received over 2,100 reports. Around 80% of them were about payment failures. Many said money was deducted but not received. Social media quickly picked up the issue as #UPIdown trended nationwide.

Multiple Apps and Banks Face Simultaneous Disruption

All major apps—Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, BHIM—faced glitches. Bank apps also failed to process UPI payments. QR code scanning and mobile transfers stopped working. This suggests deeper back-end problems within the banking systems, not the UPI core infrastructure.

NPCI Responds and Blames Bank-Level Issues

NPCI stated that the UPI system was working fine. The glitch came from technical problems in certain bank servers. NPCI urged banks to fix issues quickly. They also assured that transactions were secure, but users still faced trouble during critical moments.

Recurring Outages Raise Concerns Over System Reliability

This is the fourth UPI outage in 2025, following January, April, and June. UPI handles 40 crore+ transactions daily, so even short disruptions have a huge impact. With rising dependence on digital payments, such failures raise questions about system stability.

Small Businesses and Customers Struggle During the Breakdown

Shopkeepers couldn’t receive payments. Delivery agents faced cancellations. Apps like Zomato, Swiggy, and Ola got hit hard. Many users had no cash alternative. Some banks restored services slowly by night, but recovery was uneven. Authorities asked users to use cards or net banking for now.
