Ekta Kapoor Denies Link to Banned OTT Platform ALTT After Government Crackdown
New Delhi / Mumbai: July 26, 2025
A day after the Indian government banned 25 OTT platforms including ALTT and ULLU for streaming “vulgar and obscene” content, producer Ekta Kapoor issued a strong clarification, distancing herself from the now-blocked ALTT app.
In a public statement posted on Instagram, Ekta Kapoor emphasized that neither she nor her mother, Shobha Kapoor, holds any connection with ALTT, clarifying that they had stepped down from the platform in June 2021.
“Contrary to reports, I’m not associated with ALTT in any capacity. We exited the platform four years ago,” Ekta wrote, urging media to avoid misreporting.
Clarification on ALTT Ownership
According to the official statement, ALT Digital Media Entertainment Ltd., which originally operated ALTT, underwent a corporate merger with Balaji Telefilms Ltd. on June 20, 2025, and is now run professionally under Balaji’s management.
Ekta’s post also underlined that Balaji Telefilms, a publicly listed company, is fully compliant with Indian law and corporate ethics.
Why the Ban?
The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, in coordination with multiple government bodies including the Ministries of Home Affairs, IT, and Women & Child Development ordered the shutdown of 25 OTT platforms for broadcasting explicit content without storyline or social relevance.
Among the banned platforms were: ULLU, ALTT, Big Shots, Desiflix, Boomex, Bull App, Look Entertainment, and others. The action follows a year of public complaints and a warning notice issued in September 2024, which the platforms allegedly ignored.
Legal Action & Next Steps
The platforms have been blocked under provisions of the Information Technology Act, 2000 and IT Rules, 2021. Officials said some platforms even tried to bypass the ban by switching domains. Content flagged included long stretches of sexually explicit scenes and child protection concerns raised by the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR).
