SAKTI, CHHATTISGARH – The death toll from a massive boiler explosion at Vedanta Limited’s thermal power plant in Singhitarai has risen to 20, as of Thursday morning. The incident, which occurred on Tuesday afternoon, has left 16 other workers hospitalized, with several still in critical condition. Authorities have confirmed that the victims include laborers from six different states, highlighting the scale of the industrial disaster that has paralyzed operations at the 1,200 MW facility.
The tragedy took place at approximately 2:30 PM on April 14, 2026, in Unit 1 of the coal-fired plant. Preliminary investigations by the district administration suggest that a high-pressure tube carrying steam from the boiler to the turbine suffered a sudden rupture. The resulting blast released superheated steam and debris with such force that four workers were killed instantly at the site. The remaining fatalities occurred over the following 48 hours as victims succumbed to severe burn injuries while undergoing treatment at specialized facilities in Raipur and Raigarh. Sakti Collector Amrit Vikas Topno confirmed that of the 36 workers affected by the blast, 20 have passed away. “Of the 16 injured workers, five are undergoing advanced treatment in Raipur, while 11 others are being monitored in hospitals in the neighboring district of Raigarh,” Topno stated. The deceased have been identified as residents of West Bengal, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Madhya Pradesh, many of whom were contract employees engaged in maintenance and painting work through a sub-contracting firm, NGSL.
Government Inquiry and Compensation
Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai has ordered a high-level probe into the incident, to be led by the Bilaspur Divisional Commissioner. A separate magisterial inquiry has also been initiated to determine if there were lapses in safety protocols or technical maintenance. “This is a heart-wrenching incident. We have directed a transparent and rigorous investigation to ensure accountability,” the Chief Minister said. He further warned that strict legal action would be taken against the plant management if any negligence is established.
Financial relief has been coordinated across state and central levels. The Chhattisgarh government has announced an ex-gratia of ₹5 lakh for the kin of the deceased, while Prime Minister Narendra Modi sanctioned ₹2 lakh from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF). Additionally, the district administration announced that Vedanta Limited would provide ₹35 lakh in compensation and employment to a family member of each deceased worker, alongside ₹15 lakh for those sustained serious injuries.
The explosion has raised urgent questions regarding the safety of high-pressure boiler units and the oversight of subcontracted labor in heavy industry. Witnesses at the plant described a scene of “total chaos” immediately following the blast, with plumes of thick smoke visible for several kilometers. Operations at Unit 1 remain suspended as safety experts and forensic teams conduct a thorough analysis of the equipment failure.
The opposition has called for a judicial inquiry and the registration of an FIR against the management, alleging that safety warnings may have been ignored. As the investigation continues, the focus remains on the identification of the remaining victims and the recovery of those still fighting for their lives in intensive care. According to reports, the local authorities have cordoned off the affected area of the plant to prevent further mishaps while the cooling process of the damaged boiler is completed.
