Punjab Kings Master Wankhede Chase to Stun Mumbai Indians

Shreyas Iyer leads the charge at the Wankhede (India Today)

In a tense battle that took place Thursday at Wankhede Stadium, the Punjab Kings (PBKS) displayed yet again their remarkable form as they claimed a comprehensive seven-wicket win against the defending champions, Mumbai Indians (MI), of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 tournament. Despite an incredible performance by the star batter Quinton de Kock, whose innings amounted to an astonishing century, the MI could not defend their 195-run total.

De Kock’s Masterclass Anchors Mumbai

Punjab Kings started on the right foot after winning the toss and opting to put the opposition in, which appeared like a wise move when Arshdeep Singh took an early wicket to see Mumbai batting cautiously at 12/2. Quinton de Kock was outstanding on the field and led from the front in his T20 cricket.

De Kock ended up being not out for a score of 112 runs off just 60 balls, hitting seven sixes and eight fours during his knock. De Kock got excellent support in the form of Naman Dhir, who scored 50 runs off 31 balls. Their stand of 122 runs threatened to help Mumbai cross the 200-run mark but Arshdeep Singh returned later with three wickets to restrict them to 195/6.

Punjab’s Death Bowling Limits the Damage

The pursuit started with great intensity, with Punjab scoring 21 runs in the opening over bowled by Deepak Chahar. While the youngster Ghazanfar created some anxiety for MI with two wickets in the Powerplay, the upper hand remained firmly in Punjab’s favor. Prabhsimran Singh took on the role of the aggressor with an unbeaten score of 80 runs in 39 deliveries, while captain Shreyas Iyer added value to the equation with an economical strike rate of 66 off 35 deliveries.

In the 17th over, it all ended for the chasing team as Marcus Stoinis and Prabhsimran Singh got the job done, scoring 198/3. In this regard, it is worth mentioning that for Mumbai Indians, the loss comes as another sign of concern in their campaign in the 2026 season, considering that their best strike bowler, Jasprit Bumrah, could not pick any wicket despite giving away 41 runs. On the other hand, Punjab Kings climb up in the points table, reinforcing their reputation as one of the most consistent teams this year.
