Pakistani Goods Transit Ban Expands After Pahalgam Attack

India has escalated its economic stance by enforcing a ban on Pakistani goods transiting through third countries. This move follows the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, where 26 people died. In response, India has intensified trade restrictions to block all indirect imports originating from Pakistan.

Earlier, direct trade had already been suspended between both nations. However, traders were routing goods via countries like the United Arab Emirates and Iran to enter Indian markets. Now, the government has closed this loophole too.

Customs Reinforce Pakistani Goods Transit Ban Across All Ports

The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has instructed customs officials to heighten surveillance across ports and cargo terminals. Any suspected Pakistani-origin items, even if relabeled through third countries, will be seized.

An official confirmed, “We are intercepting goods if there is any indication of Pakistani origin.” In one instance, a Pakistan-flagged cargo ship was denied docking permission at an Indian port.

Customs teams are also vetting shipments cleared before the May 2 notification. This retroactive action reflects the urgency and seriousness of the new policy.

Operation Sindoor Drives Monitoring Efforts

This crackdown is part of Operation Sindoor, a coordinated campaign to block any product linked to Pakistan. Authorities are monitoring entries from UAE, Oman, and Iran—common redirection hubs.

Officials use AI-powered customs software and satellite data to trace shipment origins. Barcode scans and origin certificates are also examined closely. Authorities want to ensure no Pakistani product bypasses scrutiny.

Trade Impact and Diplomatic Signals

The ban severely impacts Pakistani exporters who relied on rerouting strategies. With both direct and indirect channels closed, their access to Indian consumers has collapsed.

India has also sent a strong diplomatic signal. The government shows it will not tolerate any support or inaction regarding cross-border terrorism. Security and sovereignty now shape economic decisions more strongly than before.
