The New Faces of Discrimination in Modern India
Discrimination in India hasnโt disappeared. It has just changed its shape. While laws may have banned untouchability and caste-based exclusion, modern India still sees deep-rooted biases play out in new, subtle, and sometimes digital ways.
Casteism Still Exists โ Itโs Just More Polished
Caste-based discrimination isnโt always loud or violent anymore. It shows up in workplace hiring, marriage decisions, housing rejections, and even friendships. People might avoid eating food cooked by someone from a lower caste or reject roommates based on surnames. It’s not gone, just hidden under the surface.
Language Has Become a New Barrier
Language discrimination is rising fast, especially in cities and online. People are judged for speaking regional languages or having an accent. Hindi is often forced in non-Hindi states. English speakers are seen as more โeducatedโ or โclassy.โ A recent viral video even showed a pizza delivery boy being insulted for not speaking fluent English โ exposing how deep this bias runs.
North vs. South, Urban vs. Rural
Thereโs an increasing divide between North and South Indians, especially online. People mock each otherโs food, clothes, looks, and language. Rural voices are often ignored, while urban lifestyles are seen as superior. This creates more division instead of unity.
Online Spaces Arenโt Safe Either
Social media was supposed to give everyone a voice โ but it’s often used to shame, troll, or cancel people based on their caste, language, or region. Comments sections are filled with hate, and memes often carry hidden biases. What seems like a โjokeโ is often deep-rooted prejudice.
Discrimination in India hasnโt ended โ itโs just wearing a new mask. If we want a truly equal society, we need to recognize these modern forms of bias and call them out wherever we see them.
