Pahalgam Terrorist Attack: Pakistan ‘Concerned’, China ‘Shocked’

Pahalgam terrorist attack, one of the deadliest terror strikes in the region in recent years, 26 tourists lost their lives in a brutal attack in Pahalgam, a picturesque tourist destination in Jammu and Kashmir. The incident has drawn widespread condemnation both domestically and internationally, with Pakistan expressing “concern” and China voicing “shock” over the loss of innocent lives.
Attack in Paradise: Baisaran, the ‘Mini Switzerland’ Turns Tragic
The attack occurred on Tuesday, April 22, at the scenic Baisaran meadow near Pahalgam in the Anantnag district. Known for its lush scenery, Baisaran is dubbed ‘mini Switzerland’ and draws tourists seeking peace and natural beauty.
That peace shattered when terrorists opened fire, killing 26 people, mostly tourists. Authorities believe the attackers infiltrated from Kishtwar in Jammu, moving through Kokernag in South Kashmir to carry out the strike. This calculated movement highlights a serious lapse in regional security.
The Resistance Front Claims Responsibility
According to sources cited by the PTI news agency, The Resistance Front (TRF), a proxy outfit of the banned Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), has claimed responsibility for the assault. TRF has been increasingly active in Kashmir, serving as a shadow outfit designed to blur Pakistan’s direct links with terrorism in the Valley.
Security experts point to a recent statement by Pakistan Army Chief General Asim Munir, who described Kashmir as Pakistan’s “jugular vein,” as a possible ideological trigger behind the attack. His invocation of the two-nation theory, espoused by Pakistan’s founder MA Jinnah, is seen as a provocative and inflammatory gesture that may have emboldened extremist elements.
Pakistan Responds: ‘Concerned at the Loss of Lives’
In an official statement on Wednesday, Pakistan’s Foreign Office spokesperson Shafqat Khan said the country was “concerned at the loss of tourists’ lives” in what he referred to as an incident in “Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir.”
The statement, quoted by Pakistan’s Dawn newspaper, added: “We extend our condolences to the near ones of the deceased and wish the injured a speedy recovery.” However, many in India see the statement as falling short of taking accountability or strongly condemning terrorism.
China Condemns Attack, Calls for Unity Against Terrorism
Chinese Ambassador to India, Xu Feihong, took a firmer tone, stating: “Shocked by the attack in Pahalgam and condemn. Deep condolences for the victims and sincere sympathies to the injured and the bereaved families. Oppose terrorism of all forms.”
China’s condemnation adds to the growing international pressure on Pakistan to crack down on militant groups operating from its soil.
Nationwide Outrage: India Blames Pakistan-Based Groups
In India, the outrage was immediate and intense. Political leaders, civil society, and citizens condemned the attack and blamed Pakistan-backed terror outfits for the carnage. Many also criticized General Munir’s comments as directly encouraging terrorism.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah said in a press statement, “This attack will not go unanswered. We will take all necessary actions to ensure the safety of our people and bring the perpetrators to justice.”
The Pahalgam attack has revived debates on cross-border terrorism and the ongoing threat from Pakistan-backed groups. With Lok Sabha elections nearing, national security remains a key concern for voters.
Security Tightened Across Kashmir
In the wake of the attack, heightened security measures have been imposed across Jammu and Kashmir. The region saw strikes called by various traders’ and transporters’ organizations in protest. Security forces are on high alert, with additional deployments in sensitive zones including South Kashmir.
Investigations are underway, and intelligence agencies are focusing on tracing the route used by the terrorists and any local support they might have received. Preliminary reports suggest a high level of coordination, indicating the involvement of well-trained militants.
Conclusion: A Grim Reminder of the Ongoing Conflict
The Pahalgam terrorist attack is a stark reminder of Kashmir’s fragile security. It highlights the ongoing threat from extremist groups. While global voices have offered sympathy and condemnation, people in Kashmir and across India want action. Concrete steps—both domestic and international—are needed to prevent such tragedies.
As the nation grieves, the world must unite to break the system that breeds terrorism and fuels violence in this volatile region.
