States Support Waqf Amendment Act in Supreme Court .

Six BJP-ruled states—Haryana, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, and Assam—appeared before the Supreme Court to back the Waqf Amendment Act. These states argue that the amendments aim to improve transparency and ensure better accountability in the management of Waqf properties.

Key Issues Raised in Waqf Amendment Act Case

A total of 73 petitions have challenged the constitutionality of the amendments. The Supreme Court bench, led by Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justices Sanjay Kumar and K.V. Viswanathan, is hearing arguments from both sides.

Political parties like the DMK, AIMIM, Congress, YSRCP, and AAP are opposing the act. They argue that it infringes upon religious freedom and alters the traditional framework of Waqf governance.

Proposed Changes Under the Waqf Amendment Act

The act introduces several significant reforms. It allows for the inclusion of non-Muslim members in Waqf boards and permits government intervention in disputes over Waqf properties. Supporters claim these steps will curb corruption and modernize Waqf administration.

However, critics fear these changes could weaken the autonomy of the Muslim community and erode religious practices tied to land management.
