Minor Girl Raped and Murdered in Manipur’s Churachandpur, Third Such Case in a Month

In Manipur’s Churachandpur district, a minor girl, described as mentally challenged, was allegedly raped and murdered. According to officials, her body was found on Friday in a forest in the Thanlon sub-division. The girl had gone to collect firewood in the Leijangphai area that day. When she didn’t return home, her father grew worried and went to the forest to search for her. Her body was discovered in the afternoon with torn clothes and injury marks. Police have arrested a 21-year-old suspect, and the investigation is ongoing. This is the third reported case of sexual assault involving a minor in Churachandpur in less than a month.

Looking at the previous cases for context, one involved a 9-year-old girl found dead in a relief camp on March 21, 2025. Her body had injury marks, including on her throat, and bloodstains, with police suspecting rape. The case was investigated under the POCSO Act, but no arrests were confirmed in the reports I accessed. Another case, reported on April 6, 2025, involved a 10-year-old girl sexually assaulted in Churachandpur. A minor suspect was detained, and the victim was hospitalized. These cases highlight a recurring issue of violence against minors in the region, with three incidents in roughly three weeks. The Kuki Women Organisation for Human Rights and Zomi Mothers’ Association have condemned these crimes, urging stronger action.

The ethnic conflict between Kuki and Meitei communities, ongoing since May 2023, has displaced over 50,000 people in Manipur, potentially contributing to the vulnerability of minors in areas like Churachandpur. Local authorities are under pressure to address this alarming trend and ensure justice for the victims. The community awaits answers as investigations continue, hoping for measures to prevent further tragedies.
