BJP and AIADMK Reunite for 2026 Tamil Nadu Elections

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) announced on Friday that they will contest the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections together as part of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). This marks the revival of their partnership after an 18-month split.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah made the announcement at a press conference in Chennai, joined by AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS) and outgoing Tamil Nadu BJP president K. Annamalai. Shah confirmed that Palaniswami will lead the alliance and be its chief ministerial candidate.
โThe AIADMK and BJP will fight the elections under EPSโs leadership,โ Shah said. He added that the alliance aims to offer a strong alternative to the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) government, led by Chief Minister MK Stalin. Shah criticized the DMK, accusing it of corruption and poor governance, citing issues like a liquor scam and deteriorating law and order.
The AIADMK had parted ways with the BJP in September 2023 due to disagreements, and both parties faced setbacks in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, which they contested separately. Recent meetings between Palaniswami and Shah in Delhi paved the way for this reunion.
Shah clarified that the AIADMK set no conditions for rejoining the NDA. โWe respect each otherโs internal matters and will work together for Tamil Naduโs progress,โ he said. He also dismissed past tensions, stating that any differences would be resolved through discussions.
The alliance is seen as a major development in Tamil Nadu, where regional parties like the DMK and AIADMK have long dominated politics. Political analysts suggest the BJP is strategically supporting Palaniswami to strengthen its presence in the state while aiming for long-term gains.
However, other potential NDA allies, such as the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) and Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK), have not yet committed to joining the coalition. PMK leader S. Ramadoss said his party would decide on alliances by the end of 2025.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed the AIADMKโs return to the NDA, saying, โTogether, we will take Tamil Nadu to new heights.โ
The 2026 elections are expected to be a fierce contest as the NDA seeks to challenge the DMKโs hold on the state.
