Bengaluru, March 22, 2025- Great news for India’s defense! GE is expected to deliver the first of 99 F-404 engines for Tejas MK 1A this month. This delivery follows a two-year delay. These F-404 engines for Tejas MK 1A are very important for the Indian Air Force (IAF). The delivery shows progress on the security front between India and the US.

Why These Engines Are Important?

The F-404 engine will power the Tejas Mark 1-A fighters. Delays in getting these engines have caused concern in the IAF. The first engine is being tested now. It should be delivered by the end of this month. GE plans to deliver 12 engines in 2025. After that, they will deliver 20 engines each year. This will fulfill the 2021 contract for 99 engines. The contract is worth $716 million. The F-404 engines for Tejas MK 1A are crucial for India’s air power.

The HAL is working with GE to make the GE-414 engine in India. This is part of a technology transfer deal. The iCET (initiative on Critical and Emerging Technologies) helped create this deal. This is between the National Security Advisors of India and the US. The GE-414 engine will power the AMCA. The DRDO is developing the AMCA. The government is trying to reduce delays with HAL. The Defence Ministry formed a committee. This committee will create a plan for the fifth-generation fighter program.

The committee will not look at the technical side of the AMCA. It will create a plan that includes the private sector. India wants more options for making fighter jets. This will help meet the country’s security needs. The F-404 engines are a key part of this.

Looking at Other Options

While the F-404 engines are important, India is also looking at other options. The US has offered India the F-35 fighter. India is also considering the French Rafale fighters. This includes making the M-88 engine in India. This is part of the ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ plan.

To speed things up, the Defence Ministry made a committee. This committee will make a business plan for the fighter program. The goal is to include private companies. This will give India more ways to make fighter jets. This is important for India’s security. The F-404 engines for Tejas MK 1A are a step forward. But India is also looking at other options.
