World Watches as Modi Prepares for Unprecedented Diplomatic Visit to Ukraine

In a career-defining diplomatic move, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit war-ravaged Ukraine on August 23—the first-ever by an Indian premier to the Eastern European nation in over three decades. The Ministry of External Affairs announced this on Monday, terming the visit “historic” as it resonates with India’s changing diplomatic role amid one of the most volatile conflicts across the world.

Tanmaya Lal, Secretary, MEA (West), said this here during a press briefing, adding the visit of PM Modi to Ukraine comes in response to an invitation from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Before going to Ukraine, Modi will visit Poland on August 21, another key diplomatic engagement as it will be the first visit to the country by an Indian prime minister since 45 years. India’s wider balancing act with the East and the West spans both visits.

The forthcoming visit to Ukraine assumes international significance. This is more so as India assumed a neutral stand over Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which began in February 2022. PM Modi has steered clear of condemning Russia’s actions and instead taken a stance for keeping up dialogue and diplomacy. While giving India’s stand, Lal said, “India has strongly argued that diplomacy and dialogue are imperative in the resolution of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, and enduring peace can only come through negotiations acceptable to both parties.”

Modi’s visit to Ukraine comes amidst India’s particularly warm relations with Russia, its long-time ally and strategic partner. Indeed, earlier, the Indian Prime Minister called for talks between Russia and Ukraine to find a peaceful solution to the issue at hand. Indeed, during his recent visit to Moscow, he termed Russia as India’s “all-weather friend.”.

However, India’s neutral stance is not being digested by the West, and more particularly, the United States has been putting pressure on New Delhi to distance itself from Moscow, as it fortifies its strategic ties with India against growing Chinese influence. Modi’s visit will be closely watched by the world at large who see India as a key player in global peace negotiations.

Strong Ties with Poland

Before he goes to Ukraine, Modi will visit Poland, as both countries are celebrating 70 years of bilateral diplomatic relations. It will be the first visit by an Indian PM since 1979 and is likely to take their long-standing relationship to a new height, as it deepened over the years. The role of Poland in evacuating 4,000 Indian students when the Russian invasion began in 2022 is noted by Lal, underlining the cooperation between the two nations.

The visit to Poland will also be significant for the 25,000-strong Indian community settled here in Poland. Of those, there are 5,000 students—most of them studying in Polish universities.

He referred to the historic link between the two nations, alluding to how more than 6,000 Polish women and children sought asylum in India during World War II in the princely states of Jamnagar and Kolhapur. The bond between the two countries is special and reflects a history replete with compassion and cooperation, Lal said.

The two visits of PM Modi to Poland and Ukraine are being called a momentous occasion in India’s foreign policy when the country is trying to play a bigger role in global diplomacy by treading complex geopolitical challenges while keeping relationships with old allies and new emerging partners alike.
