Sealdah Weekend Jolt: Trains Cancelled

Kolkata, September 4: Weekend travel on the Sealdah Main Line is set for a significant disruption, with Eastern Railway announcing a series of train cancellations and operational changes as major maintenance work is taken up at Sealdah station.

The disruption will stem from a seven-hour traffic and power block beginning at midnight on September 5 and continuing until 7 am on September 6. During this window, railway authorities will undertake point-conversion work as well as the replacement of fittings, crossings and glued joints along the Main Line. Associated electrical and technical work involving ground fittings, jumpers and bonding will also be carried out.

For regular passengers, however, the technical nature of the work is likely to translate into a far more familiar problem: fewer trains and altered journeys. Several suburban services originating from Sealdah will be withdrawn from operation, affecting passengers travelling towards a number of destinations across the northern and north-eastern suburban network.

Among the services listed for cancellation are selected Sealdah–Dankuni, Sealdah–Ranaghat, Sealdah–Habra, Sealdah–Barasat and Sealdah–Duttapukur locals. Selected services on the Sealdah–Kalyani Simanta route will also remain cancelled during the affected period.

The disruption will also affect a long-distance passenger service. The 53172 Down Lalgola–Sealdah Passenger, scheduled for September 5, will not run through to Sealdah as usual. The train will instead be short-terminated at Dum Dum Junction, after which the empty rake will be taken to Sealdah.

The railway’s decision comes as part of a broader effort to carry out infrastructure work during a relatively contained period and minimise disruption to the regular timetable. Point conversion and related track work are essential to the safe and efficient movement of trains, although such interventions inevitably create temporary constraints on operations.

The Sealdah network’s sheer scale makes even a limited block consequential. The station is one of the principal arteries of Kolkata’s suburban railway system, carrying commuters between the city and densely populated areas of North 24 Parganas, Nadia and adjoining districts. For many passengers, particularly those who depend on local trains for work, education and daily travel, an unexpected cancellation can mean longer waiting times, crowded alternative services or a change in their entire route.

Railway officials have coordinated the maintenance programme across the engineering, signalling, operating and commercial departments. The objective is to complete the scheduled work within the designated block so that normal services can resume after the maintenance window.

The choice of an overnight period is also intended to contain the disruption. However, passengers travelling in the early hours of Sunday may still encounter alterations as railway operations gradually return to normal following the completion of the block.

The impact may be felt most sharply by commuters accustomed to relying on the first few services of the day. With multiple routes affected, passengers may have to consider alternative trains or modes of transport, depending on their destination and the availability of services.

Importantly, the announcement does not mean that the entire Sealdah division will remain shut. The disruption is linked to a specific block and affects identified services rather than bringing suburban rail operations across the division to a complete halt.

For passengers, the safest approach will be to check the latest train information before beginning their journey on September 5 or in the early hours of September 6. Those travelling on the affected corridors should allow additional time and be prepared for changes to their usual routes.

What may appear to passengers as a weekend inconvenience is, from the railway’s perspective, a necessary intervention aimed at strengthening the infrastructure beneath one of Kolkata’s busiest commuter networks. The immediate timetable may take a hit, but the work is intended to address the infrastructure that keeps thousands of trains moving through Sealdah every day.
