TMC Sweeps West Bengal Rajya Sabha Polls with 4 Seats; BJP Secures One

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) also expanded its presence in the legislature with four of its nominees announced winners of the Rajya Sabha in the West Bengal as nomination to the legislative body on Sunday. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) also won a single seat which was expected considering the resilience of the state assembly at the moment. All the five candidates got unanimously elected because no other candidates nominated themselves before the deadline.
The winning group of the TMC is a mixture of varied administrative experience, law background, and star power. These new entrants are the West Bengal Minister Babul Supriyo, the former State DGP Rajeev Kumar, renowned actress Koel Mallick and constitutional lawyer Menaka Guruswamy. Their move to the Upper House is regarded as a tactic by the Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to enable the voice of the party on the nation-level and the law-making in New Delhi.
On the other end, the BJP was able to take former state president Rahul Sinha to the Rajya Sabha. The election of Sinha guarantees the saffron party a voice of opposition in the upper house where Bengal will be the major opposition. This position became vacant after the term of the CPI(M) representative Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya expired, and his exit is the formal termination of the Left representation of West Bengal in the Rajya Sabha.
The return officer at the West Bengal Assembly formally announced them as winners after the scrutiny process was done. These five people will be starting their term of six years on April 3, 2026, after the current batch of MPs retires.
